I bought new kick panels and some other interior parts that need to be painted red. I bought a can of dye, and laquer since the salesgirl didnt know which one to get.
i think the laquer is just plain ol spray paint, and am not sure what the dye is for. there are no directions telling what material the dye is for.
i dont have a spray gun. what do i prime it with, and paint/dye the plastic with?
I will report on all the Paddock parts when the upholstery arrives. so far no major complaints. the fender filler is cheezy plastic, but will look fine. i will list parts and brand in a few days.
Thanks for help with the paint/dying of interior parts.
the dye is for the flexible parts like dash pads and rear package trays. the laquer is for the hard plastic parts, like kick panels and seat backs. if you have an air compressor you can get a cheap detail spray gun from Harbor Freight for about $20 http://www.harborfreight.com/ .look in the other catalogs and they have the primer for the dye and laquer. Padock should have it also. call and talk with there tec person not sales person.
Tom I'am very intrested in how the seat covers come out from Padock I need some for my 69 with deluxe int. I didnt think Padock had that good of quality stuff. I wish they were still here in Ca. then I could see them before I buy. you said the the others had simulated comfort weave? was it even a cloth material or was it vinyl material made to look like the comfort weave material.you can e-mail me at firebird69racer@yahoo.com
wade, the simulated comfort weave is vinyl stamped to look like comfort weave. a weak imitation in my opinion.
comfort weave is actually braided/woven vinyl. i got a sample from a place n washington that gets something like 80 a yard.
there is a great shop in my area auto mat that does show winning interior work. they wanted 1000 to re upholster the four seats and add padding where needed.
i bought the upholstery from paddock for 339, and got new buns from them too.
i didnt get the upholstery yet, but will report as soon as it gets here. if i dont get the genuine comfort weave, the whole lot goes back to paddock, and the shop gets my $1000 instead.
Wade, and anyone else interested, I got my upholstery drop shipped from the manufacturer www.pui.cc and it was the simulated comfortweave.
the people at www.paddockparts.com were very courteous, and contacted PUI to have another set shipped. turns out there was a miscommunication, and PUI no longer has genuine comfort weave. long story short, I installed the simulated comfort weave. it looks better on a seat than it does as a one square inch sample.
Here is what I learned in case you want to try this at home.
1 - definitely get new foam. makes the job much cleaner.
2 - i bought camaro seats for the frames. i could have saved $$ by purchasing a set of raw frames that were on ebay.
3 - the covers may have to be modified slightly. here is why: on the bottom of the seat there is a gray sleeve that a wooden dowel went through. this piece is hog ringed to a piece under the foam. on one seat i left it the way it came from PUI and i have a slight pull. on the other seat i cut the ends so it pulls straight down, and looks a bit better.
4 - read an upholstery book at a library. i should have. i called a place i found on the web to confirm the hog rings had to go through the foam to the frame. the camaro seats had a different pattern, so i fabricated a piece out of a hanger from the cleaners that i attached to the frame to match the pattern in the foam and upholstery.
5 - i don't think the kit is perfect for the rear seat. i hog ringed the middle section through the foam to get the contour that was there. The original seats middle section was this way. i think it was missing something.
also, on the rear bottom the factory rods that go through the gray sleeve were shot. i had vinyl clad steel clothes line from another project that went around the perimiter of the seat and worked fine. i was lucky to have just enough wire laying around.
6- get some heavy plastic. the foam from my rear seats smells like 35 year old foam. I used a 3 mil garbage bag as a barrier between the foam and the cover. one of the sites recommended wrapping the foam in plastic to make installing the cover easier. it is true, but i didnt do it on the front seats.
7- I bought a $22 pair of hog ring pliers from an upholstery supply house i found on the web. I dont think the stamped set the catalogue shops would have lasted.
with that said, if anyone plans to do an upholstery job, good luck
Tom thanks for all the insight on how to do the seats. So you cant get the real comfortweave. How does the imation fell though does it let your body breath and not sweat after sitting in the seat for a period of time. I think I will take mine to a place to have them done. I need all new springs also on mine.
