I have a 400 68 block with 68-69 #62 heads. This set up will be in my 68 Firebird. My question is, do I need the exact casting number water pump and crank pulleys for the 68 Firebird or can I use other pontiac pulleys from a differant year and car? Thanks for the help...
i wish i knew enough about it to really help, but i do know they made some changes on the pumps and pulleys around that time.
i believe the later pumps have the same bolt pattern as the '68, but the snouts are a different length, therefore you may have to get it all from the same setup. i doubt the car model will matter. hopefully someone with more knowledge will chime in. maybe it's time to go serpentine?
there is a differance in the bolt pattern from a 68 to 69 water pump. Needles to say you cant put a 68 water pump on a 69 motor. The timing chain covers are differant. As far as the length of the shaft on the water pump you want one for a 69 firebird 400. Its shorter than the one on your motor. Your motor came out of a 69 GTO? I have a casting date 1968 400. It came out of a 69 GTO and I had the same problem. Hope this helps Joe
I'm more concerned about the engine belt pulleys. Can I use other pontiac belt pulleys from other cars and years or do I need the exact 68 belt pulleys used on 68 Firebirds??
I have seen pulley sets advertized on Ebay as for 67-70 Pontiac! Pulley diameters are not the same either. My car with a box of parts, numerous pulleys, I just played with them till I found some that worked. I think that all 67 + pulleys have the same bolt pattern. Issues might be lining up pwr steering and air cond.
