All I wanted to do was replace the license plate bulb in my 68 Sprint so I removed the screws from the repop lens cover but there was not enough of a gap to get it out! Husband came out and worked with it and gave up. I removed the tag, loosened the bolts for the bracket and finally squeeeeezed the lamp assembly out. It looks like it may not go back in without removing the bumper. Any suggestions? I can't believe something so simple would be so hard. Liz
You probably won't have to remove it, just take out the bolts in the 1/4 panel and loosen the others.
I installed mine the 1st time without the whole plate light assembly and had to pull it off again.

this might explain it. It's a quote from one of my favorite authors Douglas Adams. "The major difference between a thing that might go wrong and a thing that cannot possibly go wrong is that when a thing that cannot possibly go wrong goes wrong it usually turns out to be impossible to get at or repair."
not right tom!!! just ad more mystery to the situation! the light buld isnt the easiest thing to get to. you either tip the whole thing downward toward the car and remove it then remove the screws for the lens and replace the bulb. re-installing it is the same way only backwards! shouldnt have to take the bumper off thought but it is a serious PITA!

due to budget cutbacks, the light at the end of the tunnel has been disconnected for non payment.
Reinstalling the light turned out to be a piece of cake. I put the housing in place first and then worked in the lens until it went into place. I think it really helped to remove the 2 bolts that go thu the center of the trunk and loosen the 2 that go thru the bumper above the tag. Our next project is to figure out why the inside courtesy lights stay on all the time. We have the fuse pulled as a temp fix. The good thing is that all of them work. Liz
Sounds like a bad jam pin/switch (located on the front jam near the hinges). The pin may not even be bad it's just not grounding properly most likely. My car was the same when we first bought it...

The switches are grounded to make the lights come on. So I cannot see how bad ground would cause the dome light to light. I don't do much tech advice anymore--retired dont'cha know! So all I can say is good luck; you're going to need it with the digonostic help you're getting.
