Does anyone know if trimming the square end off the speedo cable is correct in order for it to slide into the gauge far enough for the clip to grasp on? Or does the cable need to be a certain length and is it suppose to be super hard to slide on all the way??
Different lengths for different trannies. If you cut the square end off the cable it is rendered useless as the square end is what drives the speedo.I'd say you probably have the incorrect cable if you just purchased it.

No this is the original cable and speedo, I had it apart to replace the dash pad. I would just cut off a bit and leave half the square end in place. Not sure what else to do since its the original parts here that did work before I had it apart.
My guess would be that the inner square section slid up out of the trans end. Disconnect at the trans and check the cable core. There should be enough to engage the trans speedo gear. Seat the core into the trans speedo gear then reattach the speedo cable at the trans. The other end should then be correct.

it's easy for the cable to slip out of the tranny end, making the cable seem longer than it needs to be. Between both my 'birds, I've had the dash out seven times. Twice I've had the cable come out requiring disconnection on the tranny end to get things right.
