need to find out where the neutral safety switch is located on a 69 firebird. has console shift. the shifter has a button on the top. I removed the console but cannot find the neutral safety switch. I also looked on the trans but not there either. can someone tell me where to look or where it is supposed to be located as I need to get this car lisenced as soon as possible. very dangerous starting in any gear....
There are many things that can cause the car to start in gear. If your car is an automatic trans (from your description), the console shift is connected to the trans selector lever by a cable. In turn, that is connected by a rod to another rod, that attaches to the steering column that controls the neutralizer switch. It sounds more complicated than it actually is.
I see your new to the group. Is the car new to you? Did you or the previous owner install headers? I ask this because sometimes the control rods are removed to make room for headers. Those rods are needed for correct operation on the Neutral(izer) switch.
Another culprit is the bushings for the control rods. that will cause a lot of slop in the linkage.
I've also got a '69 and had the same issue... and I couldn't get it past inspection without this being fixed. In my case, the previous owner had removed the linkage between the transmission cable and the linkage rod hanging down from the steering column. I could access this linkage from under the car (driver's side). The linkage (about 6" long) was obviously missing as the bracket was being held in position with some wire. I can send you some pictures if you want.
