My 68 has an original AM radio and I'd prefer to have the AM/FM radio with CD capability. After doing a little research I've found I can have my radio converted to the above, or for more money I can purchase a repop and save my original. I want to keep a stock appearance. Which would you all recommend? Liz
There was a thread not to long ago about that. Vikki posted a link to a place that upgrades the guts of factory radios to AM/FM stereo with hookups for external CD changes/I-pods. Another avenue is Secret Audio which can be found through most vendors.
the secret audio keeps the factory stereo in place while moving the workings and controls to an out of sight area like under the seat or inside the glove box. can also be put in the center console if your willing to cut one up to hide the radio. get a junk on eif your gonna do that though! not worth wasting 500 on a console just to cut it up!

due to budget cutbacks, the light at the end of the tunnel has been disconnected for non payment.
I am thinking about having the radio guts upgraded to AM/FM at a cost of $369. Or a stock-looking repop radio would cost $595. How much is an original AM radio worth? Don't know if I should tear the insides of mine up or sell it and get a repop. Liz
I RESEARCHED THIS ALOT BEFORE I DECIDED ON A SYSTEM. MOST CONVERSIONS SWITCH FROM AM TO FM BY TURNING THE RADIO OFF THEN ON AGAIN, SO WHEN YOU SHUT OFF IGNITION THEN RESTART IT WILL BE IN THE OPPOSITE MODE. I ASKED ABOUT BALANCE AND FADE, AND WAS TOLD THAT WAS DONE BY A KNOB ON THE BACK. THOSE REPRO UNITS LOOK GOOD, BUT REALLY EXPENSIVE. WHEN I BOUGHT MY FIREBIRD, IT HAD ONE OF THOSE "USA" AM/FM CASSETS IN IT WITH A "PONTIAC" LOGO ON IT. SOUNDS OK BUT LOOKS JUST LIKE WHAT IT IS! A COUPLE MONTHS AGO I BOUGHT A "SECRET AUDIO" AND 10 DISC CD AND PAID A GOOD BIT LESS THAN THE REPRO. I INSTALLED THEM IN THE 1959 PONTIAC CATALINA CONVERTIBLE THAT I'M RESTORING (THUS THE CAT IN CATBIRD) I LIKED IT SO MUCH THAT I JUST BOUGHT ANOTHER SET FOR THE FIREBIRD. I HAVE NOT YET HOOKED UP REAR SPEAKERS BECAUSE I AM DECIDING HOW BEST TO HIDE THEM IN A CONVERT. I CAN SAY THAT THE SOUND FROM THE TWO TINY SPEAKERS IN THE 6X9 SPACE IN THE CENTER OF THE DASH IS AMAZING. THE MAIN UNIT IS MOUNTED BEHIND THE GLOVEBOX. THE FACEPLATE IS IN THE GLOVEBOX, AND THE CD PLAYER IS IN THE TRUNK. ALL YOU HAVE THATS VISIBLE IS THE REMOTE IN HAND. THEY COME WITH ALL THE HARDWARE AND CABLES YOU NEED. FORTUNATELY THE ORIGINAL RADIO AND FACEPLATE WAS WITH THE FIREBIRD, SO I CAN PUT IT BACK TO THE WAY IT LEFT LORDSTOWN. GOOD LUCK WITH WHATEVER YOU DECIDE.....JOHN
With that dash, you have unlimited options as to what will fit, and all of them will have a stock apperance if you have the installation skill.
If you play your cards right, you can fool eveyone, and no one in the world will know the difference. For instance, I saw a 62 Catilina vert. Very correct looking car in all aspects. Had a raido with Pontiac written on the faceplate. The frosting on the cake was his billboard he had with the car. It listed the am/fm cassete as the "a rare factory option." Factory cassette player in a 62: it don't get no rarer den dat!
