did firebirds come with 12 bolt rearends because i have a 12 bolt under my 68. if firebirds were not equipped with 12 bolts, where could this rearend have come from? are camaro and chevelle rearends interchangeable with the 68 firebirds? thanks for the info.

They did not have 12 bolts in 68 Birds..Likely came from a Camaro direct bolt in, or if modified could have come from any number of GM cars.

I believe that none of the first generation Firebirds came with 12 bolts. That was a Chevy thing. (The 6 cylinder, and low HP V8's got the 10 bolts, the higher HP V8's got the 12 bolts.)Pontiac used their 8.2 " 10 bolts with all engine options.(from 1bbl OHC 6 to the Ram air 4 400)(Pontiac beefed up the rear axle with a heavier differential on the higher HP engines)If you see a First gen with a 12 bolt, it has been switched........

The standard rear end for a 'Bird is the 8.2 Should be able to find them almost anywhere!

They are stronger. How much I am not totally sure. The factory engineers felt thay are strong enough to handle a Ram Air 4 motor.
