With morning temps today in the upper 40s (farenheit for you Cannucks and Europeans) it's time to start thinking about putting the car to bed for the winter. I know people who put their cars up on jack stands. I wonder what you guys think about doing that? Is it good for the springs to stretch them like that? Any other suggestions for winter storage are greatly appreciated.
If you have trouble with mice, put upside down pie plates between the tops of the jack stands and the car. No problem with the springs and the tires will be happier.
It's ok to use jack stands under the axle and A arms. You don't want to leave the wheels 'hanging', or as you put it, stretched.
The pie tin is a good idea. I keep moth balls at the garage door and other ports of entry. I also put them around the bottom of the jack stands. Remember, a mouse can gain access thru a hole the size of a nickel. The best deterrent for mice I've found are my cats.
Once the car is ready for its winter nap, change the oil and filter. I also like to change the coolant every other year. Lube all the grease-able joints. Top off all fluids. Clean the exterior and vacuum and treat the vinyl surfaces, and if you have a cover, put'er to bed.
This way when spring rolls around all you have to do is pull the cover off, check things over, and you’re good to go.
The springs don't stretch. The shock absorbers limit the wheel travel and the springs still have some compression. Either way the springs don't care much.
I also put a couple coats of wax on without buffing.
Personally I like having a white Christmas! As long as we have snow for Christmas, I don't mind sharing some of our wonderful brisk weather, and driving in a blizzard is more fun for me than a summer cruise!

We did that the winter of '77-8. We would bounce the car off the snow banks like a air hocky puck. Great fun in an old beat up Olds. We never thought of the consequences of getting stranded. That would have been a cold walk home. Opps, sorry about the

did that plenty in Sweden.....yep fun , but not comfy!
We used to plow up race tracks on frozen lakes , go racing ,great fun in winter and educational...learning to drive on slipprey stuff....but when/if you got stuck...still cold! lol
