I was tearing my head down because I found a burnt valve. I discovered that I have a crack in one of my exhaust valve seats. The exhaust valve right next to the craked one (to the right) was the one with the burnt valve, but that seat is okay.
Is something like this common and is it repairable, or is this head trashed? I'm in a bit of a pickle now because I just ordered new valves. This is the OHC-6 1BBL.
I would get a replacement head. There's too much money tied up after it's all repaired and put back just to find out it's still a problem. Just my opinion.
The casting number tells you exactly which head you have. The 194 head is for a '68 or early '69 1 bbl 250 engine and has the largest combustion chamber. That gives you about 9:1 compression on a 250 engine which is a good number for using regular gas for the street. You can find either another 194 head or the 456 head (late '69 1 bbl head) to replace that head. You shouldn't have much trouble.
