Mine is a '67 coupe with a '72 Pontiac worked 350 engine. My problem is the Pitman Arm. The car was originally a 6 cylinder; I dropped the 350 in 20 years ago. I recently installed headers, and the 6 cylinder (straight) Pitman Arm is hitting the drivers side header on hard right turns. I purchased the 8 cylinder Pitman Arm which will solve the problem since it is crescent shaped, to avoid contact with the exhaust mainfold (header). The problem is the diameter of the end that mounts to the steering box; it is approximately 1.15 inches, as the current steering box only has a 3/4 inch mounting shaft. If I locate an original 8 cylinder power steering box, will that solve the problem? Has anyone else done this conversion? Any suggestions? The Pitman arm did hit the stock mainfold but it really was not an issue; the header is getting crushed. Thanks.
The best advice I can give would be to buy a quick ratio steering box at Napa(or other stores) for about $160. You will get a box that will accommodate the arm you have and get a much better box as a bonus. It's a direct bolt in replacement.
Drew, the Pitman arm that I got is for a '67, V8, with power steering. The outside diameter of the shaft is approx 1.180". I am a little confused because all the aftermarket steering boxes refer to a 3/4" diameter (which is what I have now) or 13/16" diameter. Do you have a steering box that is quick ratio for power steering, with the diameter shaft I need to accomodate the Pitman arm that I have? Again, I need this Pitman arm to clear the headers. Give me your email address so we can communicate. Mine is voxman57@optonline.net. Mike. If anyone else can explain which applications used which Pitman arms and output shaft diameters in '67, it would be greatly appreciated.
i can explain a bit but dont know how much help it will be. i have both set-ups. the power pitman arm is different from the manual as the shafts are different. as im told you are experiencing the difference. i believe if you switch to the power steering box it will solve the problem. i will check on the boxes to see what numbers they are. i have a 68 and 69 power box and a 67 and 68 manual box. the 68 box should work for your application. i'll the numbers on it tomorrow as i will be in the garage then. garage is across town or i'd get it now!

The arm I have is an aftermarket reproduction sold by Year One, so there is no part number on it. They claim it is for V-8 with power steering; '67 - '69. I'll probably but an aftermarket quick ratio box and just make sure the Pitman arm fits. Thanks for all your help.
