I am getting the shortblock parts together for my 455 and I am seeking some advice.
I will be using some 6X heads and I have a late model intake. I planned on using an earlier model, but I am curious if there is much advantage to doing so.
Obviously, the exhaust crossover has to blocked or filled with the use of the earlier intake. Teh question is, should I?
I live in the Pacific Northwest where temps can get pretty cool and can often be coulped with lots of moisture. I am wondering if there may be a benefit to running an intake that will warm the air/ fuel charge a bit?
We can get warm in the summer, but that's subjective as well.
What's your advice? Ditch the later intake for an earlier model? Or run it like it is?
Thanks!!
Dave

I asked a similar question at a local POCI meeting about carburation. They said what you would expect. The choke will not work without a functioning heat riser, and it will take awhile to run well when you start out cold.
The guys answering the question were referring to the use of intake manifold gaskets with blocked heat riser passages.
They are very comparible in performance. With the 6X heads you would be better off with the aftermarket intake than an original first gen manifold, better compatibility.
Where the hell does everyone keep coming up with it needs a choke; otherwise, it will take forever to run. A properly running engine will run fine without a choke.
My car has never had a choke, and its predessor dated back to 1979, when it was upgraded to a 4bbl, and I have never had a cold run problem.
I can put in gear and drive it away within a few seconds of starting it.
Also, Felpro makes an intake gasket that solves any port configuartion problem, so you can run a crossover.
