I noticed two different drums on the front of the new car. I've owned 67-69's and never seen the drum with the extra cooling fins on the PS. DS looks all to common so one was swapped at some point. Just wondering if anyone can identify it before I pull it off.

Probably one of those wierd mysteries before you owned the car.
Mine mystery is the fact that PHS says my car left the factory with a 3.08 rear axle. When I bought it, it had a 2.56.
But we are not talking about just a gear change - the rear axle code is XB - factory 2.56. Somebody took the time to completely change out the rear axle for another '67 axle.

Jim, you don't get to play name that part. You'd win everytime.
For my first stint at track days (first few sessions are required lead-follow, no actual racing until you get certified) I wouldn't mind just running the drums, I kind of like that Olds drum, wonder what it's off of and how'd I'd find another one? Ebay maybe? Hmmm.
Then I'll make the switch to aftermarket disc.

I noticed on the web site it fits most all Camaros, but Birds start at 72. Could just be lazyness setting up the web site, but I'll ask my NAPA guys, they're pretty good with the old cross over books.

Watch that you don't have a hub with a different offset. I think some people replaced them as a unit and got the wrong (but functional) drum/hub combos used. I spent some time chasing down the "rare" shallow offset hub and ultimately learned that the same was standard equipment on '68 up A bodies.
Well, I pulled it apart last night and the brake drum and the hub are to different to keep it on so I'll need to replace the hub and drum. DS and rears are fine though.
Awhile back someone was giving away the whole front FGF drum brake system when they went with disc. Anyone remember who that was? Or someone have a drum and hub laying around?

Jim's hubs are the same as the standard Firebird hub. It's my opinion that the mysterious "taller" hubs are either a heavy duty '68-69 (because they didn't offer HD drums in '67) option, but more likely just somebody replacing a hub & drum unit with a junkyard version obtained off of a Tempest or GTO. I have a picture at the bottom of this page showing the difference between the two hubs: http://john.my67.net/Suspension.htm

Can you measure the taller hub, if you still have it. The flange looks like my DS from the side.
The garbage someone put on the PS side is just that.

jim, thats the smaller/shorter hub. im with jim on this. i found out the disc set-up will work for our cars. also a few other cross overs some dont know of. cause of my find im no longer looking for a disc set-up for the front. now looking for the rears.

Shorter than what? John wrote that they were the same as standard Firebird hubs.

Jim's measurement of 2 3/8" is what I've seen on 99% of the Firebird hubs. 2 11/16" is what my taller hubs measure and they came off a Tempest. I'm changing out my factory discs for 12" rotors and wanted these taller hubs to keep the track width the same. Factory discs give our cars and extra 3/8"+ of track width per side.
Andy: Take a look at the S10 rear disc brake swap.
Ah. So it's only the discs that are different from Camaro. This makes a lot of sense. I can't count the times I've been told that the Camaro spindles and hubs were different. Time to pup that puppy to bed.
Looks like Jims Camaro hubs are the same, not sure about the drums though.
Here's the two off my car. The one on the work bench I believe is correct for a 68, the other is a future ski buoy anchor. I can't even get the hub to seperate from the drum. Even with a BAH.

I think we should start a new trend. Kind of like when Hip Hop kids wear different left and right shoes. The left looks like mine. Right looks like a NAPA replacement.

The replacment set on my car look like the drum in the first picture at the begining of this thread. Unlike today's trend, the drums were drummed? up by a high-level parts person, and I doubt that he would have subsituted for a lessor part.
They were purchased, new, in 1987, and the price was a healthy 'horse pill,' somewhere in the neighborhood of a buck-twenty-five/thiry each in 1987 dollars. The rears, purchased the same time were much less but were still a healty horse pill at about $60 each.
The incorrect drums, the ones with the additonal area in the cooling fins are obviously better quality and design than the correct one. With something like brakes, why would anyone want to use a lesser quality part in the name of correctness?
The odd one is the one piece one where you can't pull the drum off of the hub. These are what's on my 69. I think there was a thread way, way back, sometime before the board was redone that described some people having these one piece and some having the 2 piece drum/hub combos. Could be they were a stock replacement some parts store offered. I'll be pulling mine sometime in the next week to replace the brake cylinders. I'll check for any numbers stamped on them anywhere.

Tim, Way back in my memory I seem to remember taking a one piece front drum off one of my 68 Birds. It was an all original car. I think you are on to something.....
the one peice maybe just the metal being fused together with rust. have you tried using heat on the face of the drum between the studs? i have had this happen many time and the hub has always popped free of itself!
