I am in the process of taking the original 400 engine out of my 68 convt to rebuild. I checked the engine block and the codes match and the vin number matches down next to the timing chain cover but my Rotchester carb has a code of 7029270 which according to the info on this site, means that the carb is from a 1969 Ram air IV automatic 400 Firebird. Are these codes absolutly right on this site? My car was manufactured at the end of 1968 in November of 1968. Did they switch carbs at this point by any chance as I wouldn't think they would have made many ram air IV carbs otherwise with that code?
The fourth digit is the year 9 should be for a 69 the sixth digit should be the GM line it should be a 6 for pontiac. I can't think of the link to find this information but have been looking for a carb for my 69 and have come across this info somewhere. I don't know what the 7 means, maybe a factory replacement? Try a search for quadrajet on the internet and you might find a site that breaks down the #s. Pete
Your carb is worth $1000 if it is restored, and $500 if it's restorable. Don't trade it for the one you need, whatever you do. Keep it or sell it to someone with a Trans Am. There are two other codes there. One set of two letters, i.e. XD and a four digit number, such as 2778. The four digit number is the date code. Number of day followed by last digit of year.
I think I called them but they had no cores to build for me. If you come across carburetorexchange.com I sugest you check them out under Carburetor Shop through the Better Business Bureau in Phoenix before you do business with them. What they have listed on them is all true. Pete
Thanks Q, I just traded a 7028276 for a 7029268....waaaaaaaaaa. Good info though. I still have one of each . How do you get the smileys to work on here??
Ray , about the "smiley`s" , when you do a reply , you`ll see a box of "instant gremlins down below to your left , next to where you can also get 'instant' URL`s and Email''' ,just put whatever you want in there....its going to come to the 'point' where you last had your 'mouse' pointer...and click it.. Wow, $500-1000 for this 69 TransAm carb! Thanks for the info Quenton. I will look at the other 4 numbers when I get home. The carb works great too. I actually thought it was a newer carb at first as it is very clean. However, if it is worth that much I may sell it and buy a used quadrajet with proper codes for my bird car as I am trying to restore it as original as I can.
D'OH! My bad ... I meant $50 to $100. I tell ya what: I'll give ya $150 for it - just for being a good sport!
All kidding aside, I wish I still had my 270. I sold one (in deplorable condition) about 3 years ago for over $300. But I got a PERFECT 7040563 for my GTO in place of it. If I'd have held on ito it a little longer, I could have bought two new carbs. Hmmm ... two carbs .... has a nice ring to it ....
