Are there codes or markings on rear end housings that Id what they are? The guy I bought my 68 Firebird from said the rear end, including the springs, came out of an early 70's firebird. I'm looking at ordering some new suspension parts for the front and rear and want to make sure what I get will fit my application.
If you are at the rear , lay down , look at the rear axle , and approx. 6"?or so out from the left end/brakes and facing straight to the rear you should see a stamping....approx. 1/4" in ht. it may be covered in dirt and or undercoating , you may want to scrub or use a steel brush... I dont remember the different codes ,but after you find it you can ask....someone will know..
Looks like there are 2 characters on the left side of the axle. Hard to make out the second character but I believe it is XC. The rear dif has 9793019 in large characters and E158 in smaller characters located in lower left corner. Does this info mean anything to anyone?
I know it does have an open rear diff so the XC must be right. Did the 68's have multiple leaf springs or were they just mono? Mine has multiple springs, 4 on each side counting the last short one. Thanks for the help on ID'ing the the rear end.
