on my 68 conv. , there are cannister looking objects inside the front fenders. what are they ? and are they important ? i really dont need the extra weight if they dont have to be there. thx old_fart
they are "vibration dampeners" , added to convertibles after they had some vibration after first appearing in 67...you should also have them in the trunk... they are commonly called "cocktail shakers"....You can take them out, but dont get rid of them until you can tell how the car handles... hear of many saying they make no difference , but also the opposite... I have them in my 69 vert. wouldnt get rid of them , BUT if you do, you can get a pretty penny for them ,lots of people looking for those....which should tell you something...
I found this in a Camaro discussion forum some time ago.
They contain a weight centered inside them with two large springs, one above the weight and one below it. Shake one or drop it on the ground lightly and you can feel the weight move slightly between the springs. -Yes, I believe they are filled with tranny fluid. If not, it's something similar. - Supposedly the first time some GM big wig (don't remember the name offhand) rode in a convertible Camaro he complained about the way the car seemed to continue to bounce after a bump, due to the harmonics of the body without the support of a roof. He said FIX IT, he didn't care how. These spring supported weights were the fix. They help keep the car from bouncing in the middle so much. Picture a big weight lifter lifting a barbell with lots of weight (so heavy the bar is bending). When he presses it all the way up, the weights on the ends bounce up and down, and the bar bends back and forth in the middle. The cocktail shakers are suppose to dampen this motion. No special brackets are needed to mount them. The required brackets are part of them. You just need the bolts. The rears should be easy to put in. They bolt to the trunk floor and upper rear area of trunk. The fronts attach to the outer edge of the radiator support behind the headlights. They may be harder to get in. I would say you would have to remove the headlights and the brackets they bolt to that bolt to the radiator support.

as far as I`ve heard , different years have different attachment brackets....may even be diff. size...think either front or back are the same ,but the others are 'year' specific...
hear of many saying they make no difference , but also the opposite...
