I have a 67 that orig. had a 6 cyl in it. The prev. owner installed a worked 350 and didn't get to change the rear before he sold it to me. It hasn't been run yet and before I finish it and put it on the road I want to put another rear in. My questions are: what others will fit, can I merely change the guts and leave the housing, and availability and price. I would like to go with a posi. Thanks!
The strength of the rear is the same, regardless of the engine originally installed. They all used the 8.2" 10-bolt. You probably have 3.23 or 3.55 gears in the one you have.
You can buy a posi unit for the rear you have, it just needs to match the gears you have. There are aftermarket units that are plenty beefy, like the newly released Eaton unit, and the stock 2- and 4-pinion units are more than adequate for a 350.
i think most of the 6's came with an open 3.23. some of the 4 speed 6's had a 3.55.
you can just change all the guts from what i've heard.
there are three different carriers. 3.36 and up, something ranging from 3.23 to somewhere slightly below 3.00, and another below that.
auburn and eaton both make BOP posi carriers. the eaton is s'posed to be better, and cost slightly more. they are both on ebay right now.
cost depends on how many parts back there you want/need to change. you're looking at anywhere from $350 to over $700 acording to ebay, and then there's installation (prob'ly another couple hundred unless you do it yourself). make sure your rear is still a BOP unit. the chevy 10 bolt is different, and came in 8.5 and 8.2.
Thank you both for the info. I am semi educated on such things (enough to get someone hurt!) and I am thankful for the help. I will be picking up the car the end of the week and then I can go over it better and check rear tags, etc. If the rear is the same strength as others offered I will leave it for a future project.
