I always liked the AFX cars. Tyco was always second choice... I bet things have changed over the years though. I still remember my two favorite cars, a white and blue TA and a yellow and black Mach 1 Mustang. With kids that age you better get some durable ones. They are going to want to grab them. Sounds like loads of fun!
No, really they are for the kids....but what the heck-they are still young enough for me to tell them what they really want
I also remember the Tyco and AFX tracks. They were HO scale. There's also 1/24, 1/32 scale cars. Carrera, Ninco, scalextric, and scx are some of the manufacturers. Pretty cool stuff.
I read up on them today as I loved these as a kid and trying to sell my wife the idea it is a great toy for my daughter. She is not buying it.
The Carrera has been rated the best as their tracks are the most durable and widest on the market for 1/32 scale. I like the idea of the 1/32 scale versus the HO I had as a kid as you can do more with it and more detailed cars. I like the hot rods on the one link I posted above. Looks to be about double in price between the HO and 1/32 scale for a starter track.
I had the 1/32 scale open wheel Indy cars. HO was just to darn small. The 1/32's fell out of favor to the 1/24 scale since there were tracks you could take your cars to. That use to be big business. I remember the AFX cars were the HO whip! A friend and I combined a HO car track with a HO train track. We had lots of fun making the crossings.
My sons have a 1/32 Carrera set. The cars are beautiful, expensive, and fragile. Plan a lot of room for the layout. We've expanded the original set and now it's 7' by 13'. I'll post pictures later. I'm out of town right now.

I researched them last year for my son, it got shot down by the wife beacuse he was only 2 at the time. I like the Carrera the best. The track is wider than all the other manufacuters.
No Firebirds in the "Classic" race cars but they have Camaros, Mustangs and Corvettes
2012 Mustang Boss 302 #1918, Competition Orange. FGF replacement 2006 Mustang V6 Pony, Vista Blue. Factory ordered. 2019 BMW X3 (Titled to the wife, but I'm always driving it for her. So I'm claiming it) Old projects, gone but not forgotten: 1967 FB 400, original CA car. After 22 years of work, trashed by the guy who was supposed to paint it. I had to sell it. 1980 Turbo Trans Am 1970 Mustang fastback, 351C 4Bbl, auto 1988 Mustang GT, 5 speed 1983 F-150 4x4, built 302 1994 Chevy K2500 HD 4x4, 454 TBI
It is also good to have extra cars in case "the kids" get overly enthusiastic and cars fly off the track.
Glad I could help.
