help me! i'm considering buying a 69 firebird. one thing baffles me. the one i'm looking at is a 350 with a 400 transmission. can this be original? and in addition to having the p,r,n,d, on the left side of the shifter it also has a 3,2,1 on the right side of the shifter on the console. does any one know what this is? does it have anything to do with a his and hers shifter? because it looks nothing like the one inside the gto's
No its not , but it just means that either the enfgine or the tranny is not orignal ( or poss. both), it shows you have a non matching no`s car there... is the car a 400 hood car ( w air false air scoops), w 400 grille "arrow head" emblem at center of bumper? If so its prob. a 400 car w replaced motor ,OR if its a 350 hood ( 'flat hood = no scoops), no bumper emblem , its prob a 350 car w replaced engine...
you can decode it from the body tag just in front of driver on the engine side of the firewall, then go to the web page place here and find out...
"his and her" shifter is basically that you can shift "manually" w the auto. shifter , going over to the right in the oval cutout in the shifter slider cover , you get to shift on the right side to ea. gear...slightly push over and forward to ea. gear....takes getting used to...but more äfunä... a TH400 tranny was on 400 cars , the TH 350 on 350 cars...
have fun if you buy it , they are a blast! Bjorn w/ 69 (was 350) 400 convertible
Sorry , my second statement should read: ...snip..."replaced motor ,OR if its a 350 hood ( 'flat hood = no scoops), no bumper emblem , its prob a 350 car w replaced TRANSMISSION"...
one more time.... we`ll get there... my car is ( was a 350 car) a car w/ 400 replaced motor and an original th350 tranny , so ,prob. the opposite of what you are looking at...
THANKS! just to be clear if it was an original 350 it should come with a 350 transmission. NOT a 400 turbo transmission right? so is the 3,2,1 shifter a factory option? i'm looking for a firebird that's all original in texas but having a hard time. thanks for your help.

What engine code does it have? Could be a 350HO car, they came with a Turbo400. Did the car have 48 heads or a power steering loop (extra long power steering line that runs above the radiator and back to the power steering pump)?
My 69 bird came with 350 2 bbl and TH-400. It was never touched before I (we) bought it. My wife got in while we were in high school in 1975. You could order most any combo you wanted back then.
