Looking for some help... 1) anybody have any experience w/aftermarket hoods for 400 firebird like the one offered from NPD
2) can't find scoops to bolt on my hood, Year One says they are discontinued
3) any substitutions for cocktail shakers
4) my car has a ps box, mounted in line of steering column, w/4 bolt setup but only 3 are in frame, the other is just a blind hole. Also, no pump on motor. Will car steer properly or can I get set-up for ps (where).
5) anyone know if there is a part to replace steering column shift lever (converted from column to floor shift)
6) side window availability
Answers to any or all would be a life saver! Thanks!!!
the extra bolt hole in the pump is normal. if it is a p/s box, it will be more difficult to steer without assist than a manual box. if it has no hose looped, or plugs, it has been run dry, which is bad. if it has not been run dry, all you need is a pump, a bracket for it, a way to drive the pump (correct pulleys and belt) and a pressure and return hose....and some fluid. it's not difficult. even if you have to replace the box it's not that hard, just costs more. or you could put a manual box on it, which would necessitate a different pitman arm and ragjoint at least.
i have a p/s pump that was in the trunk of my bird when i got it. you can have it if ya dont mind payin' the freight. since ya mentioned shakers i assume ya have a vert. i have 1/4 glass for a vert too , if ya need it. e-mail me @ old_fart@bellsouth.net fart
Don't know what you mean by substitutes for the shakers but most people either keep them or remove them. Haven't heard of anyone substituting something different in their place. I think you will have a hard time finding someone that can honestly say they make a difference unless it is someone that's removed them to gain 0.1 in the quarter.
Not familiar w what NPD offers re: hood , but Goodmark makes a good aftermkt steel hood (often sold on EBay for abt $350)....the scoops for these are available thru Ames and Classic....( also on EBay) they also have side windows...
Thanks for the info sixstarved. John, what I meant about sub. was if anyone else came out with something that would work in thier place. A friend told me he thought there was a difference...I personally don't know. Bjorn, I wasn't aware you needed to order the scoops seperate from the new hood...should have known. Thanks for the info but still would like first hand experience from someone on aftermarket 400 hood.
You might want to give the guys at Ames a call and ask them about the hoods. They are a small outfit but they are all serious Pontiac fanatics. I have been there a few times and asked questions about various reproduction parts and have always gotten a thorough and honest answer. They take a lot of pride in their business. I have seen posts on this site stating that the new reproduction hoods are pretty nice and fit real well.
