Has anyone ever had problems with the resistance wire going bad? I have installed a pertronix ignition system and was wondering if I have to keep the resistance wire in place. I am having a problem while driving the cars ignition will shut down and then when I shift to neutral the car will start back up and usually will blow the muffler apart. Also, what is purpose of the condensor on the regulator? The engine is a 250 ohc and 2 speed trans. This is making me go crazy.
i'll take another stab at it, as i have spoken with you on this before. hopefully someone else has some input too.
the part you are asking about is called a capacitor. basically it is the same design as the condenser in the distributor, except it is for suppressing radio noise as far as i know.
are you saying it starts running again by itself when you take it out of gear while moving, or you have to shift it into neutral to turn the key to start it? you have an automatic, right?
everything i've read recently on pertronix systems says they require straight 12V. the resistor wire must be replaced with a non resistor. maybe someone else has some more input who has the pertronix system.
does it stall only while decelerating, or does it matter? the transmission can put a drag on the engine during deccel, which could further reduce the voltage, is why i ask.
i would suspect the resistance wire, if it didn't do the same thing with points in it. perhaps you are on to something with the regulator. maybe it's plum tuckered out. did you replace the ignition coil when you did the ignition swap? they dont normally cause a temporary stall, but i've seen stranger.
Scott thanks, It does restart when I put it in neutral (automatic) without turning the key as the car is coasting. I have the problem with the points in or the electronic ignition in, but it cuts out more with the electronic ignition in. I have replaced the original coil with a new pertronix coil (1.5 ohm). Does anyone know the original ohms for the stock coil? I have replaced the voltage regulator and the horn relay.
Forgive me for coming into this half way through, but this almost sounds as if you may have some Neutral Safety switch issues? Given that it will cut out intermittently, and runs when shifted into neutral, and that it happens with or with out the Pertronix unit?
Just a quick guess, and not knowing the whole story... but it may be worth looking into? That could cause some problems?
all input i'm sure is appreciated. can the neutral switch actually cut ignition power? i thought it only inhibited power to the starter motor. i know you can have it unplugged, and still start a car by turning the key on and jumping the starter.
fldohc, i forgot, you never did say how you ruled out if it was a carb issue. i guess you determined for sure the ignition is cutting out, and it's not just stalling?
i did somemore reading on the pertronix and did some testing and found out my resistance wire had only having 4.5 to 6 volts to the dist. intermitantly. So the pertronix requires 12 volts and rehooked it back up and ran fine today. Will have to keep driving it to see if it cured the problem. Thanks for all the inputs. I rebuilt the carb also and runs alot better. The car is going down for the winter and getting a fresh paint job since the primer is starting to show from the original paint job. Scott, any parts you have for sale? Interior pillar post?
i got a few ohc engine parts is all. nothing major. firebird bill and 69firebirdman have lots of stuff like that i think. try the parts for sale and wanted.
