Recently had the dash out of my 69. Now after it's all back together the gen light is on. All other gauges and lights are working properly so I'm thinking ground is not the prob. The odd thing is when I turn the key to the on position it does not light up. Only after the car is started. I pulled the cable off the battery last night while it was running and it continued to run so I'm pretty sure the alt and reg are working. Any ideas?
Chances are the 'best guess' would be the printed circuit. Since the dash was out last you wouldn't think it's anything 'under the hood'. It would most likely be something 'under the dash'. It would seem that you have your gen light circuit 'going to ground' and not to regulator.
when I got my car and had a dash problem ,every time we fixed something there was a new problem...I got a new printed circuit from Ames, it solved everything...seems the old was on its last leg and got bad grounds at different places , every time we removed , installed
Just for S&Gs I'm gonna take the alt down and have it tested. I never removed the PC or any of the bulbs from the pod. I got under the dash and checked, the gauge housing is grounded as it should be. I'm not sure if they make a replacement PC for the stacked gauges. I did have to charge the bat awhile back and I'm not sure I disconnected the cables. Maybe I shorted one of the diodes w/ the charger.
Alt checks out good. Just thinking out loud...The bulb in the dash is grounded all the time right? The only time it will light up is if it gets a signal from the voltage reg through the sensing wire, right? So it gets power sent if the alt isn't charging enough or the reg isn't working properly, right? Why isn't the bulb getting power when the key is turned to the on position and the engine isn't running? Seems unlikely the voltage reg would have gone out just now.
Hate to remind myself about a similar problem I had with my 69. I posted about this same problem with my car a few months ago. I had not disconnected the battery when I partially removed the dash to install my rebuilt clock. Same thing happened to me. Gen light drove me nuts ! I found a bad generator fuse in the under dash fusebox, after checking all engine electrical components :-( must have blown the fuse in my car when I loosened the dash ! Hope this helps !
