i´m from germany and i´m driving a firebird Coupe of 1969. I want to know where i should connect the vacuum lines of the transmission, the distributor, power brakes and which vacuum lines i should leave open or keep closed. A TVS is not installed, the lines should be connected at the carburetor and the manifold directly. The carburetor installed is one of 1978 with the number 17058202 (i think it should be the right one for a 350 engine). Here are the pictures of the front and the back of the carburetor: Please write to which connections (with the number i noted in the pics) i should hook up which parts.
i guess it's kind of hard for me to tell from the pics. i am not a v8 fanatic.
the brake booster should be below the throttle plate, at a large port, so it has constant vacuum. possibly #7 would be a good candidate.
the distributor advance should go above the throttle plate, allowing it to be advanced at idle and cruise. it should be a port of the same diameter as the port on the distributor. possibly #4 or #9. i have been told that if you blow thru the port for the distributor, you will hear a whistling thru the primaries. i am thinking that would be #4. like i said, the pics dont tell me that much, and i am not a v8 fanatic. anyway, it goes thru the primaries above the throttle.
the transmission modulator diaphragm hooks up below the throttle plate. either directly to the manifold, or to the carb at a junction of the same diameter [probably close to 3/16" (.045mm at my best guess)] looks like #8 to me.
summary: transmission #8 distributor #4 power brakes #7
the carb you have is for a 1978 chevrolet 350. one of the large ports below the throttle is for the booster, one is for the pcv. i am not all that familiar with the pontiac pcv, but it is very different from the chevy, and is not hooked up the same way at all. the carb you have hooks the booster to the secondary side. i am thinking that is #7. the rest of the ports can be plugged. if you can find a '74 or previous carb you will like it better. they had too many fuel regulations after that. (note: some of the early carbs did not allow the throttle plates to open completely due to HP regulations, so avoid them if possible)
I think I read somewhere that the dist. should be hooek below the throttle plate, also those air cleaner's look nice but I was told you should use a bigger one so you get more air.I know it does'nt make sense to me either.
