OK, looking at wiring harnesses to purchase and they are listing two different ones for the 68 front lights, one with side markers and one without. What's the difference and how do you know which one you have?
Yea, I know go and look at the car and if it has side markers you need the one with side markers right?
Seriously I'm not sure which one to get as I haven't seen the two different cars to know what they are calling side markers.....
i think they all had side markers (park lamps). the harnesses probably are different in that one includes that wiring and one does not, expecting you to use the old wires, or the wires which should come with new marker housings.
Rottie, you mentioned looking at buying a Camaro harness? The Camaro had front side markers I believe, as they had the front turn signals in the grill, while the birds had front signals in 67, and made them wrap around the front corners in 68. So for your application, it sounds like you'll need the harness with out side markers (much like the 67 Camaro harness)
Nope, no mention of Camaro In the Classic Industries catalog for the Firebird it lists four different front light wiring harnesses for the 68 V8 cars. One is just for V8 cars, V8 with cornering lights, V8 with gauges, and V8 with gauges and cornering lights. All are the same price, so I guess I'm just getting confused as why there are four different ones, since all the cars had gauges and cornering lights? It's the only year that has them listed this way, and I'm not sure why.....
I doont think you are any more confused than the catalogs...there`s always a chore figuring out which catalog calls what what! They dont agree on names formany items....dont worry about being confused, just join the group! And I dont even have a 'solution'....
ROTTIE GO TO FACTORY FIX WIRING ASK THEM TO FAX YOU A 68 WIRE HARNESS LIST THEN YOU PICK OUT THE ONE YOU NEED FRONT SIDE LAMPS ARE TWO SMALL LAMPS INSIDE THE SAME HOUSING AS THE PARKING LIGHT THEIR PHONE NUMBER IS 856-933-0801
THEY SELL THEIR WIRES KITS TO A LOT OF PARTS STORES
GOOD LUCK BILL
PS THE LIST THEY FAX YOU WILL HAVE EVERY THING EVER INSTALLED IN A FIRE BIRD YOU SHOULD BYE A CD FROM THE 69 FIRE BIRD MAN TOO GREAT INFO
Ima' 9 man myself, and have never had much interest in--other than appreciating all old iron--the 7's and 8's. So I cannot say what is and what isn't on the 7's or 8's.
One thing I can help clear up is that parking lamps, and marker lamps are 2 different things: Parking/directional lamps are on the front--the ones with amber lenses. Marker lamps are on the side and have red lenses. I don't know if things have changed, but back then it was federal law that parking/directional lamps were amber in the front and all rear lights, excluding back-up, were red.
The problem I see is that a diagram won't solve anything because if they were an option, the diagram will show it. The thing is that the diagram will not tell you whether or not your car has marker lamps.
(My Pontiac factory Service manual has a wireing digram, but it only covers 69's. By the way, you can go to the libary and find the diagram, and a good reference libarain can find it for you. Clean your nails, turn on your charm, and she'll do all the work.)
Remember, parking lamps are not marker lamps, so that should help solve some confusion. I think that the 7's and 8's have the same fenders, but the fender extensions are different, and my best guess is that the maker lamp--if it has one--would be in the extension.
Seriously, you ought to be able to look at it and tell whether or not it has red marker lamps on the side of the fender or its extension. The diagram will show you the colors, but it won't tell you if the car has marker lamps. I'm sure that your observant enough to notice side marker lamps, so if your asking about them, my best guess is that your car doesn't have them. The logic is that you don't know what you don't have.
If this helps--which it probally won't--here are the wire colors on the 69. It's a good chance that GM used the same colors on the 7's and 8's:
69 FIREBIRD
2 wires on L/R marker lamps: brown and black
parking/directional L/S: dk blue and brown R/S: brown and blk sgl/lt blue str (Whatever the hell that means. Heck! you don't think that they are going to make not confusing--do you?)
"Nope, no mention of Camaro In the Classic Industries"
Sorry, got your post confused with another post re: wiring...
Ok, Then it sounds like from what they list, that you would need the harness for a V8 with cornering lights unless you have rally gauges, and then you'd neend V8, with cornering lights and gauges...
And... before ordering, I would take Bill's advice and get a fax from Factory Fix Wiring, sounds like cheap insurance to get just what you need!
OK, so as I understand this then In 68 they had an option for side "cornering lights" (aka side markers) which would be on the fender of the car?
If this is the case, then I do not have the cornering lights. Only lights up front are the wrap-around style turn signals located in the lower valance.
I do have the ralley gauge option, just need to verify that is what is still (or was) in the car when I removed it.
I'm calling them up today to get the wiring diagram....
Thanks for everyones help trying to "clearify" what they are talking about....
I believe the confusion stems from the wiring companies making harnesses that fit BOTH Camaros and Firebirds to cut down on expenses
Firebirds did not have front side marker lights in '68 due to the "wrap around" parking lights. Camaros had separate side markers and parking lights.
An example is 1st Gen Camaro tail lights. Some models have the backup lights in the tail lights. Others had the backup lights in the rear valance. You have to know what you have.
There are a lot of instances in parts catalogs for companies that sell both Camaro and Firebird parts that they list Camaro only parts for Firebird accidentally cause that's what the vendor told them.

go to the tech section of this page read service bulletin #68-I-17 the first 68's had two lamp sockets using and extra brown wire to lite outer lamps the wire is pined in the M port of harness the bulletin says to remove wire and cut and tape back the lamps were very small twist lamp and the lens has a devider between the blubs.
I think it was some one's at GM idear about running lights\parking lights on all the time so pull your lens off and look at whats there and order the harness from a pontiac place!
That clears things up allot! It makes allot of sense now
So now the question is how close to the invoice date is the build date of the car, or is there a way to find the exact build date? The Invoice date from the car billing history is 10/09/7 (which I assume is 1967) I believe the car had single bulb lense holders but not positive, need to go look at them.....
