I built a gauge pod to install gauges out of a 1987 monte carlo in my firebird. I can't seem to get the temperature gauge to work. It does not seem to work the normal way gauges should. Does anybody know the proper way to wire this temperature gauge?
Usually just + - and sender. You have to have the matching sender for the gauge. Sometimes teflon tape on the sender threads can block the ground it needs. You can use pipe dope in place of the tape.
I bought the matching sending unit and verified it was grounded. Gauge still does not work correctly. I got another gauge and it does the same thing. I tried to bypass the sending unit and the gauge still does not work correctly. It just goes past 260 and stays all the time. It does not seem to work on the same principles as the fuel level or the oil pressure.
Is it possible the 87 model got its signal from the computer instead of directly from the sending unit? Is there possibly some type of resistor built into the printed circuit or gauge cluster? I had only bought the individual gauges so I have nothing else to go by.
I went and bought another sending unit today and it still does not work correctly. Can anyone explain the basic wiring diagram? I wired it just like I would the oil pressure gauge. Is this not correct? I just dont know what else to do.
Yes. It stills just pegs out. Even if the sending unit is not connected. The needle pegs past 260 as soon as I hook up the power and the case ground. Without the case ground the gauge does nothing. I am very confused. I hooked the sensor up as case ground it still does same thing.
I must be missing something here, either this gauge receives its signal from a computer or there must be some kind of resistor or voltage converter in the loop that I am missing. I wonder if something was built into the printed crcuit board.
