I used to be a contractor (10 years) I can tell you, the fiberglass doors hold up very nicely. They do not have the problems associated with wooden doors (warping, binding, splitting etc.) nor do they have the issues associated with steel doors (cold, dents easily (dings), weight etc.). Fiberglass is the best of both worlds and they look very nice!
Over here in cold Mpls... I have fiberglass doors on our house that I installed 3 years ago, and although they still look like new and appear to be very energy efficient, the foam seals around the jambs do not seem to seal as nice as steel doors. With a steel door, the weatherstripping has magnetic strips to "grab" the door like a refigerator, but the fiberglasss ones don't. If you hold your hand near the bottom and top corners of the doors, you can feel air movement. This is even with good quality storm doors over the fiberglass. Once the doors are installed, there is not much for further adjustment, other than the bottom sill weatherstip.
Had I to do it again, I'd go back to steel doors, but thats just my opinion.
And yes, the frames are still wood, even with the fiberglass door.
I used to be indecisive. Now I'm not sure. I went to Menards today and looked them over again and I think I'll go with a steel door. And yes all the frames are wood I don't know what I was thinking.
I wonder how much heavier a steel door is than a fiberglass ?
I think they are the same weight, approximately. One thing about the steel door, paint it a light color because they tend to expand a lot when they get hot. I painted our old one dark brown to match the trim. It got warm and stretched the plastic molding around the window and cracked it. That's why we switched to the fiberglass door. The cracked trim looked bad....
If you plan on installing a storm door over the steel door, you very well may encounter issues with heat/cold expansion etc. In fact, most steel door mfg. have a label right on them stating do not install storm door etc. What they expect people to do is beyond me, but it is a potential issue...
