I'm thinking about upgrading the front manual drums to disc on my 68 Bird. Has anyone done this and kept their 14" wheels? Seems like a lot of the kits require 15" wheels. I need advice as to which kit is good and advice as to wheather or not to get a kit with a booster. Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks!
use the GM single piston setup, like the '69 and up had. they fit with any disc brake wheel you can put on your car. there are some 14" wheels which are drum only.
an advantage to a GM kit is you can get most parts at any parts house, and ask for parts for a '69 firebird.
Excellent article! Is it safe to say all of the parts can be obtained from GM or most other aftermarket parts houses? I'm thinking it's probably just as easy and maybe cheaper to just buy the parts myself rather than buy a kit.
I've got factory disc with manual brakes and it does'nt take that much effort to stop.If you want, I bought a set of how to drum to disc instrutions. Email me with your address and I'll send you out a copy.
the dealer dicontinued the spindle around '96. i dont know about the caliper brackets or brake hose brackets. the rest you can get at a parts house except for a metering valve and prop valve.
for hose brackets, you could make some, or i think they are available thru classic or ames.
a salvage yard is a good place for alot of the parts, and some of the parts from later years will interchange. it is also a good place to pick up caliper cores, even if they are not the right ones, they will work as a core, and save you a few dollars.
do alot of research before you start. you should be able to save at least a couple hundred over a kit. there is a bit of info in the FAQ section on this site too.
there is alot more stuff i would like to include about lines, valves, fittings, and other specifics, but this is enough for now, and might be included in the instructions Doug has.
Thanks for all the great info guys! Doug, I sent you a PM regarding the instructions. Sounds like the best bet is to round up the parts myself. Thanks again!

I just recently put '73 Nova front disks on my '67 bird. Direct bolt on swap. My 14" wheels (not stock) still fit but with about 3/16" clearance at the caliper. Not enough for me ! but I'll be going to 17's anyway.
I bought the instructions on the impulse,so I can't say for sure if they work. Out of all the copy's I've already mailed out nobody has ever said either way!
i put on the single piston disc brakes on my 67 firebird convertible from a 71 olds 442 and the only thing i needed from my drum brake set up was the steering arms and my rims are JC code 14" i mounted the proporting valve right under the power booster just like the manual one.talk about stoping power. hope this helps
