talking about steering lock, I have a 69 that doesn't lock because of a broken Rack Gear ( the half gear on the end of the ingnition key lock cylinder) does any one know where to find one. I can't seem to find one in a catalogue and every yard around here wants you to buy the whole column
Not according to Pontiac literature. That feature was introduced for '69.
Thanks, My 68 with deluxe interior manual floor shift had some sort of spring and pawl loose in the upper column when I took it apart. Looked kinda like a lock but I saw no way for it to work. Might have been part of the flashers. The column had been apart by a pevious owner so some things were left loose. In a race car the last thing you want is a lockable steering column so I wanted to be sure.
Wanting a Custom fit in an off the rack world.
I don't have time for a job, I just need the money.
Check the Library in my signature link and look up the illustrated parts index. Perhaps you can ID the loose parts you found just for peace of mind.
With the ignition on the dash in '68, there was no provision for ignition lock; the '69 column also incorporated a back drive linkage, even in console shift cars, to lock the column. These are not present on a '68.
If your car was originally a column shift converted to floor shift, you may want to cut off the column shift lever to prevent any interference with the headers, or replace the column with an aftermarket or factory floor shift column.
