About 6 months ago a childhood friends brother was murdered.I have known this guy for 30 years but have not been in touch with him for probably the last 10 years. The story made the news so i contact him and payed my respects in person.We got to talking and started to talk to each other by phone and via email.In January, he mentioned we should go to a Toronto Maple Leaf game for a boys night out.I said i'd love to and that I had a connection for tickets. I made the deal with my connection and purchased the tickets for $170. At this time i had my mother in law staying with us so i could go to the Thursday night game while my wife was at night college courses. My mother in law decides to go for a visit out of province and lets me know a few weeks in advance and in turn i cannot get a babysitter for my young children and i let my "friend" know this and that if he wants the tickets for the $170 he can have them and if not to let me know and then i would sell them on Ebay.He said he wanted them.So he asks me how to pay for them and i told him to send me a cheque for them and i shipped them out to him.Well it's been a month now and no cheque and no communication! I have sent him numerous friendly emails to no avail. I know he is online.It kills me that this guy was preaching the old friends, family crap when we spoke (reflections of his lost brother) and then to go ahead and do this.He works for the city and his wife for a hospital.They both make good money so WTF!!!
Tonight i had it with this guy.Short of kicking his a$$ i am remaining calm about it. I have tons of online communication printed out,phone records,tracking info and a signature that the post office required photo ID before he could pick them up.
Tonight i sent him a polite but firm ultimatum that gave him until the end of next week to make either the full payment or if he was strapped for cash we could hammer out a payment plan and if neither of those were made or discussed that i would then proceed to take him to small claims court.I told him that was a last resort but i WOULD do so and in turn seek the cost of the tickets,lost wages, court fees,transportation and parking costs (out of town) etc...
I feel like a [censored] but WTF! Crappy thing is we have a group of mutual friends and i'll be the dick.
I told him that i do not work two jobs and overtime to pay for someone else to take their kid to a game when i could have taken mine (which i cannot realistically afford to do, which is another reason i sold them)

Just to clarify, you already sent the tickets? If that is the case that no way are you the [censored], he is. You sent the tickets and he failed to pay for them and is not responding to your requests. It's all on him in this case if you ask me. He should either call you and make a plan, send the tickets back to you or at the very least send an E-m with some explanation...

That is correct.I sent him the tickets early February (at that time he said he'd drop the check in the mail) He went and enjoyed the game on Feb 21st and has yet to pay me for them or reply to any of my methods of contact with him. Shite, he even posted on Facebook he was going to the game (which i printed out) and i can see him online there almost everyday (which i also print out) so he cannot tell me he was on holidays or his computer was messed up,etc...
I can see some online scammer getting me pissed but it REALLY sucks when you can put a face to the story, especially one that was thanking me for being one of the few childhood friends to pay their respects to his brother and thanked me for driving the 125 KM one way to do this and how others 10 blocks away couldn't show up and what pieces of shite they were,etc... blah blah blah....
Went to school together, lived right across the street from this guy for years,went to his wedding,etc... and now this shite. I just shake my head.

I guess you "paid" to find out the truth about your friendship.

No you are not the [censored], but you likely will not get your money back. Your energy might be better spent doing more pleasant things.

There are so many people out there like that. Turn their back on you for a few dollars. And they all had to be someone's childhood friend. You are guilty of trusting someone that you didn't really know at all. It's easy to see that now. Some people have such a good line of BS that you will be fooled... once.

The right-wrong factor is a nobrainer, and your actions are warrented. The thing you have to keep in mind is never front/lend money, no exceptions. When you follow this path, of course, you'll become a [censored], but sometimes you have to be a [censored].

I think this advice is right on the money. The more you dwell on this the more it will undermine your happiness. It doesn't sound like this guy has been a very big part of your life for the past decade. What does it matter if he's not a part of your life in the future. Myself, I've got plenty of childhood friends I hope I never see again.

Being a [censored] would be leaving paint scratches down both sides of his vehicle.

Best thing to do is write it off as a lesson learned. Move on, life is too short.

Screw the small claims, it isn't worth the stress for $170....just be thankfull it will be another 20 years at least before he crosses your path again, if ever.

I bought a Nikon SLR off ebay for my daughter at xmas....$435, had it mailed with insurance...well, it got lost after it hit customs (likely a nice xmas present for the delivery driver).

The sender neglected to keep his receipt with the insurance proof etc and now I am out the money according to him, as the delivery tracking says it entered Canada...and so no need for him to supply me receipt, anything...well how the H$ll am I supposed to get insurance you freakin idiot!!!....anyone in Ohio?, I have a [censored] available there!!!

OK, now I've vented...I may as well kiss it goodbye as well....

Thanks for the replies and for allowing me to vent. In essence, it really is not about the $170.Do I want to be out the money? Heck no! But I can make that back. It's about the principle of the matter. If he thinks he is going to take me for a fool and skip off, he is dead wrong.At this point i'll drop the coin necessary to make it an incovenience for him. I know i have the goods on him and a court will see that as well. As for collecting a winning verdict that may differ.If i have to put a lein on his car, home or garnishee his wages, whatever or however long it takes i will get him back.
As mentioned,it has been eating me up though and i have to stop letting it get to me.WPOS

Thats what blows me away. People wrecking friendships for squat money and in our car world,people wrecking potential future parts sources (in Terry's case) for squat money.Maybe the guy bitching at Terry is the same guy i'm after! LOL and he needs the $4.44 to pony up to me. LOL
