I am going crazy trying to figure out where the back-up light switch is for a 4-speed floor mounted Hurst shifter with a Muncie transmission. I have replaced my original Hurst 4-Speed shifter with an aftermarket Hurst 4-speed. Suppposed to be fully compatible but I see it is not. The aftermarket has a add-in plate for a reverse switch. Original I can't figure out where the darn switch is. Presently the backup lights are on all the time when the car is running. Hopefully someone can steer me in the right direction as to how to get this to all work. I am going to get the original Hurst shifter rebuilt but in the mean time how do I get legal? Thanks, John
The switch you're searching for is mounted to the top of the steering column down near your feet. It's held on with two small scew/bolts. It has a pin that fits in a slot in the column that is supposed to slide back and forth when you put it in reverse. Of course this assumes that you don't have headers and no one has removed the reverse lock out linkage.
Originally, it's on the lower steering column. You probably do not have the reverse and lockout linkage that connects and turns the column collar. You can turn it by hand and get your lights to go off. Turn the part of the column that would turn if you had a column shift and see if your lights go out.
EDIT: Looks like FireBob is a little quicker at the 'lights' on this Sunday morn. I need more coffee! Shouldn't have ate that worm at the bottom of the bottle.
Firebob and Fbody69, thanks for your responses. This solves the mystery. This car came from the factory as a Muncie 4-speed 350HO. At some point in it's life it was converted to an automatic. Prior owner put back in the Muncie. I found the backup light switch on the bottom of the steering column but the area does not turn and has no provision for a pin, at least from what I can see. My guess is that the steering column must then have been replaced as this must be an column from an automatic. I'm going to use the reverse plate and switch from Hurst and then connect the wires to the power connector for the switch on the column. Appreciate your help. John
