I am trying to decide if I should rechrome my original bumper or purchase a new one. 1968 Conv. Ames and Performance Years both list the repro as "driver quality". Redoing mine, plus shipping etc.. will cost a lot a more. I don't mind spending the money if it is worth it. Anyone know how good the quality of the repro is?
front or rear? I know my friend has a repro front for his 67...looks good has had it for 7 yrs now.... personally I`d go re chrome ,its a better bumper, but for 'driver' its ok w repop...
I just got the driver quality repo from Ames last August. It looks a lot better than my old bumper. If I had a trailer queen I would be disappointed. When it was stamped, the metal didn't flow perfectly in the die. There are ripples in the corners that are noticeable. But again, I got what I paid for. Ames represented the bumper very accurately, and even replaced the first one I bought since it was dinged in transit. The chrome looks good and the fit is good. You better decide whether you can live with the ripples.
I had my rear rechromed and the front is still in very good orig shape. I was extremely happy with the rechromed rear...and it's heavier construction than the repro's. Cost me about the same as a new repro...about $175 if I recall.....
I agree with Dave that the reproduction is thinner.
I hope my previous post was accurate rather than biased against the reproduction. I really do like it. I was just trying to describe what they meant by "driver quality."
