I have a '68 Bird and wanted to upgrade the factory drums. The cheapiest/easiest way to switch looks to be to use '69 Camaro components. I'm not worried about originality obviously, but I would like to keep it all GM.
Using '69 Camaro spindles, backing plates, caliper brackets, calipers, hoses and rotors. Would this be a direct bolt on for a '68 Bird? Would anything else need to be changed?
I will be using a new master cylinder, manually adjustable proportioning valve and new lines.
Direct swap. It might be cheaper to look for 69-74 Nova parts, they are the same also. There are a few others that swap also. I can give you a list if you like. Camaro stuff cost a lot because most people don't know that other cars interchange, and because it came from a Camaro it must be worth more. Just don't use the Chevy steering linkage as that is different
Thanks for the info Wade. I'll check out the other parts too. I plan on reusing all the steering linkage I have and buying the other parts new or reman'd.
There's also some new drum shoe material out there that's supposed to be pretty good. The tests I saw had the A-body with drums stopping almost as good as the disc brake car! Without fade, which is pretty impressive. Unfortunately, I don't remember the manufacturer.....
