Ever get to that point where you just want to scream and bang your head against a wall? I'm there. I got the old pinion and ring back in the bird, but decided to use the new crush sleeve. Well... trying to get that thing to crush, stripped the pinion nut. So... try the other pinion nut from the wrong pinion since they're threaded the same... going good... and bam. Strip that sucker too. Anyone have any ideas, because I'm about to go insane in the membrane.
It's probably not the nut's fault. I bet the socket is the culprit now. Get a new nut and a new socket and try again. You can put extra washers on for the crush to get that nut out there where the socket can grab it better.
Didn't strip the head, just the threads. Anyway, went to the chevy dealership in town and picked up TWO nuts, just incase we stripped another. Got it all put together, and it's up and running saweeeeeet now. Also managed to find a buyer for the wrong gears since we couldn't find the box they came in and the company refused to take them back, so that was pretty awesome too. Will put some pictures up in about 20 minutes.
My pain from this week is going to last quite a while.
Got my new 455 finished in Feb. Mounted it nice and easy with the tranny attached on a bare subframe. Spent the past couple of months slowly putting the front half of the car back together. A few trials, some customizing, but it ran and I was this close to having it legal for the street. 10 years this car has been off the road.
Decided to take it around the block Thursday. Open headers so I took it slowly. It's probably the 4th time I've had it running.
I blew out the rear oil pan seal. The friggin motor has to come out again.

Old or new style pan and gasket? When you have it out, let me know what happened. May have a few tips for you.
FWIW, i've been fight'n a shift linkage issue since last year. Decided last night to make my own lever(attaches cable to trans). Every one i've tried either wont go all the way from park to low. Or from reverse to drive select has a wrong throw. Or park to reverse/neutral. Or from drive, to 2, 1. Or...
Milodon OEM replacement pan. "3-tab" rubber rear seal. It bulged out between the middle and a side tab.
This fix is going to have to wait for quite a while. I emptied my "Firebird Fund" getting the car running and I am in no hurry to revisit all the little challenges I had getting the motor in. Besides, I am probably relocating again this summer.
Gas prices are much of an incentive now, either.
It's time to put this project on the back burner again.

Here's a pan seal trick to avoid bulging out; Use a continuous bead of silicone gasket sealer on both sides of the gasket. Install the pan and just barely snug up the bolts. Wait at least 24-48 hours before re-torquing. The seal shouldn't squeaze/bulge out that way.
