LOL...dont get a new rug yet! we still have a coirner missing off our Family room oriental from 13 years ago...when our then new Cocker pup made that $5000 rug a $200 rug in 15 minutes! I had planned to get the rug fixed this year ,but I wont until Patrik moves with this new dog , 'just in case'.... this one had "interest" in my blazer arms (hanging on a kitchen chair)wednesday night, caught him in time though...
AWWW Bjorn, that's my kind of dog there! Pure mutt. I love em. You couldn't have done better than that. Just perfect! He does have some Jack Russel looks...
We were feeling pretty low after our Shepherd passed too, and three weeks ago adopted an 8 month old mix from the Humane Society. He was listed as Lab/Coonhound but one look will tell you he's Lab/Chow...blue spotted tongue and curled tail.
His former family dropped him off as incorrigible so I'm spending lots of time working with him. He is intent on destroying my daughter's flip-flops, he chews through nylon horse leads as if he was equipped with heavy shears, and he's intent on plucking every flower out of the garden. That, and he bolts out the door the instant it opens, and he's as quiet on his feet as a cat. We live on a very busy two lane highway so this is one habit that absolutely has to be broken. And he really, really wants to get at the chickens, and not to play.
And he is very alert, very protective of his new family, yet he's accepting others once we welcome them into our home. He barks like a proper watch dog, then quiets down. That's an improvement over 15 minutes of hysterical barking every time he heard a noise, and the first three days of nonstop barking after his sudden plunge into new surroundings.
He loves to ride in cars, but until he learns to stay inside without jumping out, no convertible rides...

Nice choice! We had a black Lab and Setter mix and she was a sweetheart. Always afraid of loud noises, she was a reject from a hunter that found out she would run away every time he fired his gun. She was an avid shoe chewer until about 9 months old and still ocasionally after that. It must be a Lab thing...
We were shooting on the range up at the property over the weekend, and while the old mutt went inside the camper to hide, this one went to investigate the source of the sound.

I'm hoping he'll get over it. Our other dog, Charlie, was adopted at 3, and he was a deadly squirrel, rabbit, possum, raccoon and woodchuck killer. The chickens were just another critter to him. Repetition and exposure got him to where he just watches them, but if one is loose he will herd it to us or if it doesn't cooperate, he'll hold it down until we come and get it. He doesn't harm the chickens, but if he can catch a rabbit etc. it's toast. At 13, he's not catching many anymore.

Even though our Lab was gun-shy she was always a hunter. When she was 9 there were three racoons on our deck. She saw them and got real excited. Our cat, the Lab's companion for 6 years, jumped off a chair near her in the heat of the moment. She killed the cat in an instant. When they have been trained for generations to hunt the instinct will always be there.
We got a Black Lab in 84, very nice...he was a year old when we got him I went to a jobsite in Austin...contractor had 3 dogs on the job...wanted to get rid of one....I wanted a dog ,but wife didnt... so I said "no thank you"... but as he called the Black Lab later..."Rolex"... I said , "thats his name"?
"yes it is"
"hmm ,that might work!?!"
I called the wife who had always wanted a Rolex...: "Do you still want a Rolex"?
she said "YES"
I say:"Ok , I`ll bring him home at 5"...hung up...LOL
but that dog NEVER stopped digging, he dug a new hole to sleep in every day,I could never stop him from doing it... ..the yard looked like France during WWII... and he dug up and ate the tulp bulbs my wife planted... he was a nice dog thogh ,very good with the kids...
Yeah, this one gave digging and scratching at doors a try. Also running through the house like he was possessed, on antique chestnut floors and 1820s white pine and fir floors.
Easy fix, used hockey tape to tape some old hunting socks on his paws. No claw use, no traction, only took 2 days for him to give up all those habits. Now he'll sit and woof at the door gate to go out or in.
The way we trained the old dog not to hurt the birds was redirection. When they get too excited, they forget to think and act like natural animals. So we'd stick his favorite toy between him and the chickens, leave him tied where he could see but not reach them, and he'd take out his wild behavior on a toy. Eventually he grew out of it, and now you can let him in the coop and the chickens will run and fly and he'll just watch them, even if they crash into him.

Found a baby racoon in our old ferret cage sit'n by the garage when i got home from work. About the size of a kitten, it tried to follow my wife into the house. One of our 18lb tom cats alerted her when he tried to get past her to it.
But dad, its sooo cute...
One of it's siblings was pancaked in front of the house this morning, so figure they lost thier mother.
