Driving normally today--shifted into 2nd gear -cannot get the transmission out of 2nd. I assume it is a linkage problem. How much work to repair the linkage ?
It might just be something loose/stuck with the linkage that needs to be tightened up. I'd only charge you $100 to fix it but the air fare would run you about $4K(first class of course).
Got the news on my M21 today---not good. He told me the linkage is factory and in perfect condition (all new bushing and as tight as can be. He thinks if it happens again the tranny will have to be looked at. 2nd gear synkkro may be bad.
He must sell transmissions. I've had this same thing hapen to me so many times it's rediculous. It's always, and I mean always, some loose. Whether it's the bolts holding the levers onto the forks or the linkage sticking and pulling the wrong fork into gear. The last time was at half track and I had to finish in second gear(that was imbarrassing). Had to get two wheels up on a slope so I could crawl under and push it back where it was supposed to be. Hasn't done it since. Take it to somebody else.
Your original was a short throw. Either repairing the washed out holes in your linkage or buying a new shifter with new linkage rods may fix it. To decide if you need both would be a decision made by inspecting what you have. Always start with making your shifter and linkage perfect before tearing into the transmission.
I just put a new Hurst Comp. Plus (replacement) in last night including the nylon bushings and it is pretty darn nice....not sloppy at all...darn glad I swapped the worn one out in fact
