Hi folks, I got a friend for my bird. Its a 79 Vette. I was told the motor is a late 60's 350/350. I found a number on the back of the block - 14016379. Can anyone help me to ID this motor? How does one ID a chevy motor? Is that # the ID number? Any help with pointing me in the right direction would be great. Also any Vette guys here? I always wanted one and this one is a 4 speed with t-tops that was cheap. Its a L82 but I think that just is the type of motor it had originally. Thanks
It´s a service from Year One and it´s okay to give you a first impression... Hope it treats the newer cars like your´s, too. It helped with my 66 Elko...
Thanks for the links. After checking the sites I see that the number on the back of the block is the casting number and is a 78-85 car/truck block. The engine ID code by the water pump is VH102800. It does not make sense because V is Flint, H1 should be a month like 06,02 is the day and looks ok and 800 should be 3 letters. It's called the engine suffix code. CMS would be for a 78 350 L82 Vette. I don't get the 800? I also don't get the month H1? Thanks for the help.
look at the numbers again, sometimes they look like other numbers or letters. There should be two sets of numbers stamped on the pad. One is the Engine ID Code, and the other is the VIN code. If it is a factory installed motor. If it has only one set of numbers then it is more than likely a replacement motor.
This is from one of the sites
"Note: CODE CE was used from 1968 to current year. It represents any CID and is used to indicate a Warranty Engine. VF292800 - is an example of a over the counter crate engine. "2800" is the last 4 digits of the GM part # for the crate engine assembly. The final digit could be a year code. Another example: A Targetmaster engine (p/n 14009800) built in 1985 could have a code stamped as follows: A0198005 (A = January, 01, 9800 = pn, 5 = 1985)."
