hey guys what is the paint code for the pontiac engines. I have a 400 CID from 1969 and want to paint it to its original color but dont know the paint code. Furthermore, do i have to ask the people to make it heat resistant or would it come that way already? When i refer to "the people" i refer to the guys at Color Craft. Thanks for the help Gabriel
Hisch is the name of the code or its a company. I was going to buy the paint from Color Craft that is just around the corner of my house but if this company is cheaper bring it on. So where can i go to buy that paint and what is the paint code.
Do you guys have any special techniques on putting on the paint. From cleaning to applying the engine paint. Just ordered the paing from Hirsch, they have very good prices I believe. Anyways your input is appreciated. Gabriel
Make sure the surface is very clean (obviously) and dry. Lacquer thinner removes all grease and solvents better than just about anything. Acetone also works - but not as well.
Paint in very light coats rather than one heavy coat. Paint over the exhaust ports with only one very, very light coat. Do not prime any surfaces that are cast or machined.
Hey Gabe, the key is good prep before hand, and just before painting, go over it one last time with a wax and grease remover.
On the heads where the exhaust ports are, and on the center heat crossover on the intake manifold, save them for last, and just give them enough paint to cover, and light coats. The thinner it is in these areas, the less problem you'll have with the paint burning off, (as it will eventually no matter what) and it will last longer.
Did you get it in the spray can or the brush on in the quart? Either way, just take your time, pay attention to the details, and it will look great! Just like a Pontiac Motor should!
I better answer this before Q tells you about my "willow twig" ...lol
cleaning and painting it ,it depends ....are you painting it in place or out of car? I painted mine in place....was just rebuilt 8K miles before and former owner had a liking to bright yellow! Cleaned it thourolly w laquer thinner , brushed it w a very small long brush....took about 3 hrs on top, later did underside , when I got hold of a lift , add 2 more hrs for underside...and there are still places you wont be able to cover ( like at juncture of starter and engine, inside pulleys...) , but if same engine color , no problem (but yellow will show up! ) I used 1/2 of a quart can... if you have engine out , just buy the spray.... not sure what others recommend for cleaner.....
Thanks guys, just waiting for my engine and paint to ship in and I will start the painting. Bjorn you must have A LOT of patience to be able to paint the whole engine with just a PAINT BRUSH! Anyways i bought the spray cans and will be painting the engine on an engine stand so it will be better i guess to just use the spray can...dont know if i can handle the brush, sorry Bjorn . Anyways thanks for the input and hopefully I can take some pics and show it to you guys so you guys can see what i did with all of your help. Thanks Gabriel P.S. Finally I got my 400!
Gabe , no dont be sorry , you `re doing it right...that brushing, leaning over was hell on my back! But I had no way of getting engine out of there , plus no stand....and just wanted that yellow gone ,so..... My dad always told me :" what you dont have in your head , your whole body will suffer from"
Just in case anyone else might have a problem like Bjorn did i was a bit of research and seen a way that could help out on painting the engine while your engine is still inside the engine compartment. Here is the link guys i believe it is very helpful. http://www.classicalpontiac.com/restoration/10.html hope it helps anyone out there.
