i want to put my old headers on my new engine. the problem is, that the cylinder heads of the new engine only have 4 wholes for exhaust manifold installation and the headers will need 6 wholes for nuts (the 2 outer wholes are missing). the old cylinder heades are #46 and the new are #11. what should i do? should i drill wholes for the nuts?
About the only way you can get the headers bolted on is to drill and tap the two end holes that are not drilled in the heads. (This is not all that easy to do with the heads still in the car.) If the heads are in the car and you remove them, there is almost no reason to keep them. The #11 heads are 1970 350 heads. These are for low compression motors. They have small valves and press-in studs. With the kind of gas you have available in Germany, I would recommend looking for a different set of heads that will give you more performance and have those holes drilled. What size motor do you have?
If you wish to use those heads, you must drill and tap for header bolts.
Use the headers as a template. Bolt them to the heads with the other 4 bolts. Center-punch the two outer hole locations, then drill and tap the holes. Drill with an 8mm drill and tap with a 3/8-16 UNC-2B tap. Make sure you drill as straight as you can.
Way back when, I had headers on that type of heads. I found the solution was to bolt them on without the end bolts. Leak? Yeah, small pinhole leak on the left side center port--a dab of high temp pukey did the fix--but the end ports sealed fine.
Actually, there are a few companies that make brackets that bolt into the front and rear of the heads that angle like an "L" shape that let you bolt the end flange of the header onto the head...
I think Jegs and Sumit may cary them, but I'll try to find the info and will post it for you.
(Sorry, it was Spotts Performance: http://www.spottsperformance.com/headLbracket This is all you'll need IF, you decide to keep the heads you have, and or run them until you upgrade...)
I believe those won't work on the #11 heads because the bolt boss is there, but the holes are not drilled. I think those brackets only work on the style heads where the boss isn't even cast in. I think if you try to use them against the head they cause interference.

@nashville68bird: your german is better than my english!!!!! you can find pics of my bird on my homepage; go to my profile there is a link to the site. at the moment the whole front of the bird is dissambled for replacing all the bushings and putting in the new engine, then i will paint the car, because the color it has is terrible. i´m located about 60 miles away from munich in bavaria. if you come to germany again, let me know. You are welcome.
True Q, so true. I found that most Germans south of Frankfurt did not get too excited about formal/informal blunders, they were just happy when an american tried to speak their language. HOWEVER, most germans NORTH of Frankfurt are very picky about usage. Thats why I spent most of 14 years in southern Germany, Bavaria! PS - Girls are prettier in the south. The closer you get to the Alps, the prettier they get! Lets have an FGF Fest in Munich!

I'm all for an FGF get together in Munich. How about the 3rd weekend in September?
Also, what you say about the German folks is very, very true. My Family is from Switzerland, so I spend a lot of time in southern Germany every time I visit. I always get a kick out of them trying to figure out my accent.
