I searched the forum and all of the books I have, but did not find enough information about the change of the rear wheel bearings on my 68' F'bird 350.
There are a lot of informations about the front bearings, but none about the rear bearings. Why? Is it so easy??? It is definitly different to the front bearings.
Can anybody give me a link to a description or give me the description directly?
remove the brake drum and remove the 4 nuts use a slide hammer bolt it to the axel and pul the weight out hard this will cause the axel to pull out from the pumpkin. the axel is onlly secured by the 4 nuts and the clip attached to the splined end of the shaft.. then you have to remove the bearing with a press ( I would take it to a shop at this point) once removed the new bearing is pressed in with a new gasket and the plate in place. once done you slide the axel in and slowly trun it till the splines meet with the pumkin then using mallot pound the shaft till it seats with the tube being carful not to tear the gasket. once set tighten the nuts and youre done thats it.
Lemmi, do you have the '68 Pontiac Service Manual? It's a simple procedure. Pull the axle from the 'dif' housing. Then have the old bearing pulled and a new bearing pressed on the axle.
thank you for your help! I see, it will not be an all DIY-job, because I do not have a press. But I will do the removal and the reinserting of the axel.
