Sorry if this has been addressed elsewhere, I searched but couldn't find the answer...

I'm about to do a motor swap in my 69, it has a 400 in it and I want to put in a 428. I dont have access to any build sheet only the firewall, dash and block stamp numbers. Can I tell if this 400 is the original, factory installed motor with these pieces of information?

A 69 should have a partial VIN on the block to the left of the timing chain cover.

I found it; 156029 YT. I read all V-8's should start with a "2"???

Be sure you are not reading the number just below the head on the front passenger side of the block. The VIN is stamped right next to the timing chain cover...very difficult to see. I couldn't see mine at all until I removed the timing cover. If original, that number will match up to your VIN on the dash.

YT is correct for 67-9 as a base 400 and if an automatic trans.

Date next to distributor hole roughly should be H--8 to G--9 for a 69.

extended model year for '69, could be up to L--9
