I am looking for an oil pan for a 400, Summit lists 1 from Spectre that fits 68-77 Firebirds, but a stock pan would be nice, anybody used the Summit chrome pan or 1 of the other chrome pans listed on E-bay that are even cheaper. I have heard that cheap chrome pans leak, any opinions, thanks Jeff
It's not the pan than leaks. It's the fact that the replacement oil pans are all machined to use the mid '70's rubber 3-tab rear oil pan seal which is prone to "blowing" out causing a nasty leak. There was an letter to the editor in HPP back a couple of issues on this subject and it happened to me so I need to pull my engine back out down the road.
There are a couple of solutions. One, put gasket seal on both sides of the 3-tab seal, let it dry, tighten down the pan and pray it will not blow out, or have an aftermarket pan modified to accept the much better replacement design 5-tab rear seal.
The HPP article also pointed out that if you have an early block, where the rear bearing cap is machined with a groove to accept the early cork rear pan seal, you are also good to go using that type of seal with an aftermarket pan.
