Not FGF related but really curious what average life one should get out of a clutch. My mom (60+) bought a '06 Honda CR-V NEW with 4cyl and manual trans. She "always liked manual" and specifically wanted manual. Just racked up 39,xxx miles and all of a sudden while driving it wouldn't shift gears. Took it to Honda and $1600 for new clutch. She got the extended warranty too when she bought the CRV. They say it wore out and is NOT covered at all under warranty. I got the old parts and the disc is about worn down to the rivets and the other half (sorry I'm auto) the disc is cracked in 4 places and looks warped. We've contaced Honda Customer Service and she is complaining to maybe help get reimbursed, but I'm thinking that's WAY to early for this to all of a sudden "go out" It was working perfect up til that moment. Any thoughts? Or is this just normal?!?!? She got a Honda for reliability and even got the extended warranty for extra protection in case.
Funny thing is I have bought NEW AMERICAN since I could afford it. 1984 was the first, I have had no warranty claims since then. Honda for reliability????? Some peoples eyes are slanted away from the truth. I know I will probably be blasted for this but I ALWAYS try to be an AMERICAN first. WAKE UP and realize what sending the profits overseas is doing to your own daily lives!! Because the big companies are doing it, everyone should See what they are NOT seeing............. Blast away!!!!
could be a bad clutch plate ,it DOES happen....in 1972 I bought a NEW Volvo a 142 manual, one of the few new cars I bought...I traded in my old Volvo 122 with 110k on it...in 1600 miles the clutch went out...they claimed it was "driver who didnt know how to shift"...at my dads dealership!
I told them to go look at my trade, also a stick shift...it was still there...check the mileage...I had driven it for 3 yrs...they did put a new in under warranty , I drove that car to 85k....no more clutch problems
Even funnier thing is I have only bought new and old American too. My post was about clutch life, not how buying a Japanese car destroys our daily life. That's awesome that in 24 years none of your american cars needed any warranty work, or maybe they were just out of warranty.

Yeah, tell me about it.I didn't want to mess with it as I don't have time and a rental car was adding up. Took them a day and a half. Its AWD too.
Bjorn: Yeah, could've just been a bad disc or just a freak thing. I saved the parts in case. I'm guessing the disc heated up and cracked, but I'm hoping Honda helps out as the milage was low. That's the first thing the dealer said, "she's not shifting correctly" From what I've read online most were at least 80k some up in the 100's before changing clutch.
not shifting correctly is a nice come back, but if you have previous experience with a couple of 100`s of thousands of miles driving stick? then its NOT the driver.... first manual car ,yes very probable...

That's why it cost an arm and a leg, AWD. Read the fine print in the warranty. I would think that's something that should be covered. Does you State have a lemon law?
It isn't very common to see a clutch wear out in such a short time. From the discussion about the (what sounds like) excessive heat issues, it would be natural to assume driver error.
I agree the first and easiest response is "driver error". I mean I've driven with her before and everything seems to be normal. Maybe the hydraulic clutches are more sensitive? I made sure to check to see if she leaves her foot on the clutch while driving and she does NOT do that either. I'll check the fine print on the warranty too. And we do have lemon law here, but don't know how that would work, as it is easy to say its a wearable part. My "American" '02 Chevy 4x4 2500HD has 120k on the ticker and still on original brake pads. So I know things wear differently on different vehicles. Just hoping Honda will step up and pay for it. If it goes out again in another 30k then I'll blame Mom! (Honda called back today but she didn't get the message til after hours, so we'll see how it goes) Thanks for the replies.
