My 69 firebird convertible needs a new steering box, I was told that a 77 WS6 is a much better box than the one I have.. NPD has a fast ratio steering box for $280 that fits 77 - 79 and is supposed to fit on my 69 bird, is this good or can someone point me in the right direction.
Also I need a center link for the car, NPD part # C6870-1 is for a 69 camero, is it the same for the 69 bird.

It is not the original ratio. The original was a variable ratio box, and the new one is a constant ratio. The change in steering feel is that it doesn't feel as loose. It has lost the 1-finger steering feel so common in 1960's cars to a more modern heaviness when you turn the wheel.
John, Did you have any issues, either with the center link hitting the oil pan or concerns with the pitman arm? I've needed to replace mine for a while but I thought I remember reading somewhere that the Firebird boxes were different from the camaro boxes.
My 69 vert also has the variable ratio 1-finger steering and is starting to have a lot of play in it.

The 'play' in the steering gear can be adjusted. If thats the problem. Check all the other linkage componants first, i.e. tie rod ends, pitman arm, idler arm and drag link for wear. Then check the gear, it should not be leaking from the pitman shaft or steering shaft. The adjustment procedure is in the Pontiac Service Manual.
I've checked and/or replaced all other steering components and the remaining play is in the box. I was told by several mecahnics over the last 25 years that I should never adjust the steering box because "bad things will happen", like accelerated wear, etc.
Is it safe to adjust the box per the manual? Thanks.
