I have a 1968 pontiac 350 4 bbl engine that needs a new carburetor. I wanted to get some advise from this forum on what would be a good carburetor to select (reliablity and performance are primary, cost secondary). I could always go with an original rochester quadrajet but wanted to get some input on what has worked well for others (Edelbrocks, Holley's, etc.)
Some advantages to the Q-jet slight advantage economy wise in terms of gas milage compared to a Holley. Can use the stock fuel line. Can use the stock choke connection.
I have used a few different carbs and it hard to beat a Q-jet when it comes to a street car.
I bought a rebuilt Q-Jet from the NAPA store when I converted from a 2bbl. I am amazed how well the thing runs without any trouble. It just happened to come in with a 1970 Pontiac casting number. It was rebuilt by Tomko I think. Cliff Ruggles says such rebuilts should be avoided because they use parts from different carburetors in the same carb. I respect Cliff but I guess I got lucky, and maybe it's just because of the inherent quality of design in the Quadrajet.
Is the voting closed? I run a Holley 670 Street Avenger on an Edelbrock intake. I plopped it on and never adjusted a thing and it runs great. The electric choke also functions well.
