Good morning. Over the years, I've tried to replace the gas door spring in my 68 Firebirds door. Bought 4 springs so far and none of the resto places, like AMES who sell it can tell me how to install it. NOt cheape, and the door has a shaft with small ears, so no way to remove it without ruinine it. HAs anyone ever found out how this is done yet? Thanks, maybe I'll have to die before I get all the answers to my questions. And then go oh duh, of course, and I was trying to make it complacated.
Yes, I have done it. If I remember correctly I paid $25.00 for the PoS spring, easily the most I ever got hosed on an FGF part. I used a work bench vise to hold the spring, and used a small rod and ball peen hammer to work out the pin. The hole that the pin sits in has a slit all the way down it. I used a small screwdriver to relieve some of the friction on the pin by spreading the gap apart while I tapped. There were actually two of us working on it.
