I have 7 yr old repop hood hinges on my car...2 mo ago one of them broke, lost a 'rivet'...so I have a bolt w nut there... I`ve bought two new re pops to replace with (thinking that if one broke ,the other is next)...and my question is this: Can one replace these one at a time , with some trick, so one does not have to remove the hood to do it? Meaning, I could do it by myself rather than have someone help me to lift the hood off? Anyone done this and have any tricks to do this?
Im thinking that maybe you can open it , tie a rope around the side you remove ,tie it to the garage clg joists? and have a blanket between hood end and windshield?
I think HO428 had a rope and winch system tied to his roof joists, so why not? Just brace it front to back so it doesn't sway towards the windshield.
If you take the whole hood off, don't store it on its end tips! Or someone on this site will get really mad.
I used to be indecisive. Now I'm not sure. LOL, ok ,so the same thinking...I thought of rope to joists, a broom stick up front...and some soft weight on the back end...
nope, I`d NEVER put it on its rear corners...just told a fellow HALFer that last weekend as I visited his garage (where he had one like that)...you think he would listen..? nope...he left it just like that...said ,its already there...but guess if something will happen... an "I told you so" will be said ...lol
I do not see any reason you could not switch them one at a time. Just place a rage or something under the corner you are working on and prop/ tie the hood up with something like you said. I did a lot of things on my car that probably should of used two people.
The only trick I know of is for the installing the springs. I pushed fender washers in between each twist, alternating sides until it was stretched enough to place on the hinge, than pulled them out one at a time when in place. Made it really easy to install.
Oh, and did you buy re-pops or GM's? They are still available you know.

Bjorn, I just did mine a few months ago. I simply put down a few rags and a wood block on the corner I was replacing, and a tie down snugged from the roof of the garage at the top of the same side. The hinge slipped out and in no problem. I did both sides that way...
PS, I heard the repop hood hinges aren't all that great. The usual advice I see is spend the extra $$$ to get the GM ones,

thanks...but not sure I want to get some used ones....my old origs were worn , "had play" and when I painted the car the painter didnt want to re use them ,because he was worried about them breaking... and the 'play' may also affect the way it fits after being closed...
I know the repops are not as much quality as the origs ,but the new GM are $130 or so....and I wont mind changing these again in 20-25 k miles -6,7 yrs...
the reason my repop broke , is probably excactly why they dont have good reputation...wear out quick...
Actually between the top hook suspension and the block it was quite stable while I swapped the hinges out (one at a time of course). Believe me I checked before I let er hang on its own while I did the work
Basically the opposite hinge stabilizes the hood while it rests on the block. The top hook further stabilizes it and insures against it dropping down and excessive torque due to the weight on only one spring .
I compared my repops to the originals and they were pretty darned good in guage, stamping and workmanship...time will tell...but it ceratinly cured instantly my hood fitting issues.
