I looked at a '67 400 this morning, and I could not find the VIN on the block. After I read in one of my books that the VINs weren't added until "late" '67.
If you have a '67 with the VIN can you share your body build # - or better define "late"?
The owner has the original broadcast sheet. It clearly displayed the body # which matches the cowl tag, but I was disappointed to see the engine # was not included. Does this sound right?
Finally, I only scraped/wire-brushed for the VIN down to where the lower radiator hose attaches to the waterpump. Could the VIN be lower down?
Yes - I used the body tag analyzer (very cool tool!). Although the date code is the one thing I remember the coding on from my prior A-body life. It is a mid-March car. It had the correct YT code (automatic) and the engine # was there as well. Although I did a bit of web surfing and found that the YT code was used on-and-off through 1978!
The trans tag showed 72-PX-67978. The PX code is correct for this car, but I believe the "72" means 1972, so I'm pretty certain that the transmission isn't original.
I didn't check for the block casting date as I'm not sure where it's located.
I don't think any or not many 67s have vin# on block. the block casting # is on rear of passenger side head. the date code is by distributor. Did the data plate have 3F on it?
I have a June '67 built Firebird and there is no VIN on the original block.
HOWEVER, there is a motor unit number stamped on the block that matches the one listed in my PHS documents. That's about as "numbers matching" as you are going to get along with the right casting numbers and dates.

Also, real early 67 400's (cast late 66 and maybe early 67) have the 8786133 next to the distributor with the oil plug going through the middle of the number.
