I'm considering installing the following wheel vintique wheels:
93 SERIES BILLET PONTIAC RALLYE II
On my 67 400 Convertible. I have a few questions.
1) Will the 17" wheel and a lower profile tire improve the cornering/handling of the car? 2) What wheel width should I get (7, 8, 9.5, 11) assuming I go with a tire width of 225 or 235. My objective is to fill the wheel wells with the widest tires without modifying the wheel wells due to rubbing. 3) How do I determine how much backspacing to use? 4) What tire aspect ratio do I need to keep the overall wheel/tire height at stock levels? 5) In your opinions, do you think that the stock 14" wheels with 225/60 series tires would look better than the combination I mention above?
personally I like the stock look, but my friend Andy (out of the country until next friday) has 17`s on his 67...here`s a picture...so if you like it ,you can get the info from him next week...

We have an owner in central Ohio that has the billet rally II's.

It will to some degree, but ride quality will lessen.

That I don't know since I'm happy with stock 14" Rally II's.

The factory backspace is 4.5" You won't want to stray to far from that. Unless you want to do body or axle mods.

This link is great to use to find what you care to compare.

Your advice and opinions are appreciated.
Thanks.
IMO, Yes a 14x7 will accommodate a P 225/60. Will it rub on a '67-8? That would depend on a few factors, mainly ride height. I'm sure others will chime in on this matter.
I have factory 14x7's with P225/70's, and I'm very happy with the ride and handling from these tires. I wanted to go with a 60 series tire, but I think it would be overkill. And that's my story.
There was a guy who put 17's on his 68 with RAII heads and complete suspension upgrades. It was in HPP a few years ago, maybe longer. I have the magazine, and will forward the year and month so you can look it up online.
Yes, the quality of the ride will decrease, but with wheel and tire mods, I would highly suggest a complimentary upgrade of the shocks, sway bars, bushings.
The article will point you in a good direction as to what worked for him.

You can fit a lot more in the front vs. the rear. A 235/45 will easily fit. A 245/45 gets tight, but works for many as long as the backspacing is correct. On the rear a 255/55 will easily fit, but many do a 275/40.

Use the stock wheels, crank the wheels and measure clearance.

Depends on the height. A 245/45 is 25.7 inches which is close to original.

Gosh no! I prefer the shorter sidewall. But to each his own.
You can actually fits some pretty fat stuff in there but you have to make sure you have the suspension pretty tight or you may get some rubbing especially with the rear leaf bushings. I need to buy one of these myself,if I do maybe I'll start a rental of it as you prety much use it once.

got to be a rough ride, almost no air in those tires....better make up for it w air suspension....thats like old wheel barrow wheel, steel over wood...lol
Almost looks like that new high tech tire wheel combo that has no air they've been talking about. Only the flex comes from the rim instead of the tire on the new version.
