I'm new to this forum, but I like what I've seen. I have a 69 coupe that was changed from column shift to floor. I'm looking for a replacement column that is for the floor shift. What years and models would be compatible with my 69 with power steering. Thanks Ted
Are you sure it was changed?? ALL of them have the column shift stuff from the factory, and its just being used by using the floor shifter, this is from factory...the column has the shifter linkage, the back up light switch etc in it , you still need that... you "probably" have the factory set up.... my 'guess'...
The column I have now is original as far as I know. However it is been damaged and I wanted to replace with a column that doesn't have the column shift coller. Am I limited to just a 69 steering column or will other years work? Thanks Ted
Bjorn, Sounds like he had a column shift car that someone installed a floor shift on. Maybe the column shift handle is still there or has been removed.
Is it automatic or manual , is it a tilt column or not?
I dont have an answer on interchange but you will need to specify these. I also though I read that Camaro was not a direct bolt up. Not sure though.
There are also services that rebuild steering columns. Don't know abou damaged external pieces though. Maybe they can swap the collar for you?
Ted, if the column is damaged and if it still has a part from the shifter there...,change it ,but if you are worried about the collar moving, it is supposed to do that , even w a floor shifter... maybe were talking different problems here, I just remember me noticing a "problem" w mine...which was that the collar moved..
about the years of steering col. I do not know if other years fit or only 69... try Terry Ritter youjincho@prodigy.net , he usually has 69 parts ,prob. a steering column or two also....
Bjorn is right, in 69 thay changed, and there is a rod mechanism for the shifter/locking ignition etc. that will be in all 69's floor or column shift. Even for the floor models the collar will also move as if you were shifting a column shifter. I would guess that the best and easiest replacement would be a 69. I'm sure others would work and could be used (you can make anything work) but there would most likely need to be quite a bit of modification to make it work like the 67/68 column.)
