Hey guys Im interested in doing a 4 spd conversion on a 69 bird conv. It now has a two spd powerglide. Shifter is on the column. Would like to install a sprint engine with # matching 4 spd saganaw with hurst round bar. Can anyone tell me how involved this would be, parts needed to do the swap ect. THANKS
Rounding up all the parts will be the biggest hurdle. And doing the swap will require a good mechanical background. Do you have the OHC-6 already? If so, it will need the bellhousing for the L-6, a V-8 bellhousing won't work. The cross member is different. All the other necessary parts are the same, but I may be overlooking something. Why a Sag 4spd? The 3spd was/is a Sag, 4spd trans were/are Muncie M20 and M21's depending on diffy ratios.
Tom, A bit of that info is incorrect. The 4 spd on the Sprint option is a Saginaw. PMD used it because of the lower first gear. (3.11 compared to 2.20 for a V8)You can identify the gear ratio on the Sag by counting the rings in the input shaft. 2 rings indicate the 3.11 first gear.
Wachs, You may have a hard time finding a "numbers matching" 69 Sprint/4spd with the correct round bar shifter. There simply was not alot of them made. Even if you did, it would not match your VIN. One could piece one together to look correct with a bit of work. You will also want a floor shift column not mentioned above. You will want to consider your rear axle ratio, as the Sprints came standard with 3.55s.
First let me say that Im not looking to make a "fake " numbers matching car!! PERIOD CORRECT I guess would be the term. I just like the OHC sprint engine. I already have a sprint hardtop with three spd. and a sprint vert. with TH350.THESE ARE ALL NUMBERS MATCHING ORIGINAL CARS. Just looking to convert this particluar car here because I have a numbers matching sprint engine sag. 4 spd. hurst shifter combo to put in this car.Not worried about matching vin numbers the car wont be for sale this is just a project I might do. I have the bell housing too. The car itself has the ohc 1 bbl. engine. Im guessing that the crossmember will still be needed for the manual trans, floor shift steering column is needed , how difficult is it to swap the clutch brake peddles out I also think I Read that the Z bar is needed too. The drive shaft is that different? It would be cool to find someone that did this before and could send me a list of what is needed. I am able to do the work myself just never did before. Rather then just diving into it Id like to know before hand what needs to be done. Thanks again for the info. Great to have all this info available to share with. Chris
I am helping a friend right now who is converting an auto to an M21 on a 69 El Camino. It is definately a huge job and more parts than one might expect. The guy doing the work is a perfectionist and does them 100% complete and 100% accurate. To do a conversion properly it takes a lot of time and money from what I can see...
Driveshaft and crossmember should be the same as what you have. You will need the pedals, Z-bar, and column as stated. Not much else, as the fuel lines, engine mounts, radiator, etc are the same. You may need a different throttle cable? (length is different I believe) I am not as familiar with the 69s, so this is all I can think of off the top of my head.
It's all the other little stuff that really adds up. Clutch fork, clutch fork ball, return spring, z-bar mounting bracket, z-bar engine block ball/pivot. The list goes on...

Good luck in your search.

I had to post that to draw ya out of the wood work Rob. I did state I could be corrected. Thanks for the update! I'll file that one in the 'things I thought were...' file.
I think the round stock Hurst shifter is being repoped, but just the lever.

That's one area I do know, the throttle cable is the same for L-6 and V-8. The engine mounting bracket is different of course.
