I've had my car for a year, 6 months of that it has been on the road. During that time, I never copied the ignition key. I had two copies of the door/trunk key, but only had one of the ignition key.
While I was TDY for the past month, I left my keys at home. During that time, my dear wife lost the keys. Do I have to buy a new ignition, or is there a way to get a key made for the ignition?
The door key for a '68 is normally the same as the ignition. I presume yours is different for some reason?
Did you ever check to see if your key matched the Billing History code? If so, just take that code to a GM dealer or locksmith (not the corner hardware store) and have them make a key to that code. You have a 50/50 chance anyway, and it's worth the $2.50 gamble.
Instead of making spare keys, I made photocopies of my keys. A locksmith can compare the photocopy to the GM key chart and make one easily. Just note which blank is used.
If not, a locksmith can indeed make a key for your lock cylinder. You can call the locksmith to the car, or take the ignition switch to the locksmith. You could just take the cylinder, but you can't remove it without the key.
Don't feel bad, the key to my yellow car was lost hours before I first saw it, I had to call a locksmith to get it home. And you know the keys will show up...just after you've had one made.

I think I'll have to go the locksmith route, because this car was actually two cars put together from the best parts. It doesn't surprise me that the car oddly has separate keys for the door/trunk and the ignition. Thanks for the pointer on the locksmith, and for the fact that I cannot remove the ignition cylinder without the key being inserted. That would have driven me crazy.
Bet the ignition was changed. That's what happened to me with both of my 'birds. Three keys, one for the ignition, one for the doors and one for the trunk/glove box. I just had the door locks changed to match the ignition. They must have had a lot of problems with the '69 keys and ignition. I've known several '69 GM's where the keys broke off in the ignition. Or it was programmed obsolescence.
